Beowulf is an animated film. The actors have had their visages digitized, and watching the movie is a lot like watching a video game. In fact, I found the artwork highly reminiscent of The Elder Scrolls, but that may just be a form follows function thing. The key advantage of anime over live action is the lack of encumbrence by the physical world, and Beowulf does that like no other movie I've seen. It's the only non-anime I've seen that can match anime for the level of gore in melee combat. And their's a great advantage to actresses - Angelina Jolie's boobs can be forever young. When I saw Beowulf, I saw the best parts of anime being done better than anime. Their's only one anime I've seen that I liked better - and it would be great if Akira were redone with this level of computer animation.
[EDIT: Since Beowulf isn't anime, but the topic is relevant to animation as a whole, I added the "Semi-Off Topic" label to the title. -TK]

To answer your question, no, I really doubt anything like this happening in the near future.
For one, Beowulf has nothing to do with anime, it was not made in Japan, and it's highly unlikely that it will influence animation studios in changing the style they've used for decades.
Also, these companies budgets pale in comparison to Beowulf's $150 million budget. And even if they were to pull of something like this, it wouldn't be profitable at all (assuming you did this for a regular 25 minute anime episode). Anime doesn't seem to be very profitable even with a normal budget.

While not anime itself the possibility is there this style of animation in the movie could influence anime companies in Japan. That being said that possibility is about as high as Zac posting on the forums he actually likes loli. It won't happen. They have certain ways of doing animation, and we here have certain ways of doing animation. Each have their merits and flaws. And as mentioned look at the budget difference for this movie over your typical anime series. They once did take a stab at something similar though, it's called Final Fantasy Spirits Within. Look how well that did? I doubt they'll be up to trying anything like that again except with the possibility of a big budget movie. Certainly not a tv series though.

I haven't seen what you're talking about but full 3D has been done - Final Fanatasy: The Spirits Within, Flight of the Osiris and Appleseed. Given the large quantities of regular 2D anime pumped out each year since I'd say this fission mailed.

I saw a few minutes of the Final Fantasy movie and it wasn't anywhere near as effective. And FF was NOT shown in 3D. The technology didn't exist at the time.

Anime studios wouldn't simply have the money to produce anime in 3D. And even if they did have the money they would fall into uncanny valley that plauged some current gen games that is on the market today.

Pushing aside the production aspects, I don't see fans really accepting a replacement of of 2D animation by 3D, at least not right now- just as 2D sprite games like the Disgaea series are still being made despite 3D polygons being readily available, 2D animation will continue to exist because people like it. Unlike 2D sprites, which tend to look pretty pixelated compared to their 3d brethren (not matter how carefully they're made), the 2D 'look' does not suffer from the march of technology- in fact, it benefits from the added detail computer rendering allows.
Perhaps, sometime in the future when top-quality 3D animation is readily available and affordable for TV productions, we'll see a shift toward it- but right now, these kind of films are the exception to the norm.

I've watched the movie, and while the show is typical fantasy fare sadly, the real problem were the actors- they looked like the actors! There would have been no difference in the way it looked than had they done it like Sky Captain, frankly.
Neil Gaiman, where were you?

No offense, but then you really don't know anything about it. I've heard from more people, including reputable reviewers, who state that it looked really good and the 3D was quite impressive. Sadly people generally put more weight in negative reviews; for your average person it seems one negative review has the weight of 10 positive reviews.
Regardless this will not be the death of anime in any way. It is sort of the future however as performance capture is bound to become more affordable and will open more artistic avenues for studios to take. Will it take over? Not likely, not in the long term anyways.

Beowulf is indeed a terrible film in my honest opinion. It does look great, as the animation is very impressive (save for an awkward moment here and there), and the story is passable (if melodramatic). The musical score is quite solid also (if a bit overbearing). Sadly, the movie fails in too many critical aspects. The direction felt very amateurish many a time, and the acting was rather poor. The hammy (and also quite cheesy) dialogue didn't help either; not to mention the many pathetic attempts at humor, but I digress.
Anyway, this won't be the death of anime in any way, shape, or form. It would be interesting for anime studios to utilize Beowulf's approach in the future, however. Personally, I would love to see an anime that use entirely motion capture. Heck, watching an anime in 3D wouldn't be bad either. Just as long as it has the substance to back it up, unlike Beowulf.

Doubt it.
Haven't seen the movie, but the posters just look plain damn ugly looking.
Half of the reason why I probably watch anime is to slobber over bishounen guys looking cute and angsty.
Pretty colors, nice action and hot guys from Saint Seiya.. vs ugly dark and overrealistic ugly ugly ugly half demon guy from ridiculously expensve Holywood flick.. I think we know who won this match.
I like my hangyous to be hot, angsty and wearing pretty clothes. Long silver hair gains bonus points.
Until Hollywood gets the formula, I think we know what shows I'll continue to drool over.

I think the better question is, wouldn't it be better for the cute angsty bishounen guys to be in 3D, and have them slobber over you?
