O.k., The Drifting Classroom is one of my favorite mangas and I enjoy each installment of them once they have been released. 3 of my friends and one of my cousins have read it after I suggested and enjoyed it. Plus, my grandma even knows about this manga (I'm telling you the truth here)!
But besides all of us, I feel like there isn't a big fan base out here because I haven't seen much popularity for this series anywhere, not even a forum anywhere. ![]() Then again... I might not be searching enough.... But who is a fan of this manga? Is there anyone out there? |

I'm collecting the series at the moment, and I've liked what I've read so far. It hasn't really scared me like I thought it would, but it's turning out to be very interesting.
I'm going to pick up the next 2-3 volumes that I don't have at a convention next month. |

Awesome, awesome manga. I'm not even that big a fan of horror as a genre, but Umezu is just a master storyteller and continually deifying expectations, not to mention weaving social commentary into a shonen manga (you don't see that nowadays). Each volume impossibly manages to be even more batshit insane than the last, which is an achievement in itself.

I am a huge fan of this series. And I love the art. The older style just brings out the uniqueness of this series. I have only ever seen the first 2 volumes in stores but I wish it was widely available. I do think however that the older art is a turn off to a lot of people because they like layouts all over the place with cutesy girls and hot bishounen on everypage. I like how we get panels of just nothingness as if staring into the abyss on this strange world.

I just bought volumes 1-3 the other day and am looking forward to reading the series. I've never been able to find it in most bookstores I went to but I luckily found the first three volumes in a local bookstore that was going out of business so I got them for 60% off.

I'm a fan. Some reviewers were drawing comparisons to Dragon Head and Battle Royale (young people in dangerous situations), both of which I liked, so I decided to give it a try. It sure is creepier than most of the pretenders you see in the genre today who mistakes "scary" of being the equivalent of "gory". I'm starting to wonder how the story will be wrapped up, but judging by the content in the first six books I find it hard to believe we'll see a happy ending.
That is probably true. I'm not used to the old-school aesthetics Umezu uses either, but I'm getting into it. I only wish the sense of continuity and pace in the story had been less hectic and maybe a little more contemplative. Every calamity is followed by another and there's hardly a pause where nothing disturbing happens. Maybe that's the point... |

For me, the art is kind of a good and bad thing. First off, the bad thing is that the expression in people is a bit of a turn off. Everybody looks like they are yelling and frighten, even if they are just talking. Another thing is that a lot of the kids look older than they are with the lines on their face. On the other hand, the amount of detail in the location and setting is impressive. The characters all look different than each other, so no one looks the same which is good. |

Gintama and One Piece? Not that I read them to be intellectually changed, but... Anyway, I'm not hawt on horror manga. The only real examples that I've read are Ito's Uzumaki and Gyo, and found them average (though the short story at the end of volume two in Gyo is great), with no real substance and unmoving attempts at freaking readers out with grotesque imagery. However, The Drifting Classroom manages to affect the reader psychologically, which does get me interested much more (Dragon Head and Domu do likewise). The panel work seems rather fitting of the times, so it's rather unimpressive, and the emotional range on the faces of the children are limited, but other than that I don't have any complaints. It's an excellent manga that, if you aren't against old skool art, you should check out. I'm undecided on whether I like Dragon Head or The Drifting Classroom more, though. The latter has a bit more substance, but the sheer insanity in the former, particularly in the recent volume seven which wowed me like few manga have, gives it a bit of an edge for me. |

So I have never really read "horror" manga before, but I finally read through the first three volumes and I'm liking it very much. I wouldn't have classified this series as horror and as you pointed out it seems to me more of a psychological thriller. It also took me a little while in getting used to all the characters with their mouths open, but it's grown on me quite a bit. Heh. Can anyone give some examples of what they would consider "pure" horror, I guess? I just wanted to compare it with something else of the genre seeing as how I don't really view the Drifting Classroom as a horror series at all. But I still like it a lot and look forward to reading more of the volumes. |

Actually I was commenting on how the more effective horror is psychological; I much prefer the type of horror that plays with your mind than the grotesque kind that plays up shock value.
Dragon Head is another excellent horror manga, though not in the sense that you're thinking. I guess Ito's Gyo and Uzumaki would be what you're asking for. I don't fancy either series (though the short about the fault at the end of Gyo's volume two is great), but you might like them. |

Well, I've been lurking on the forums for a while and finally decided to register because of this topic. I really like this series. As much as I would like to support Viz and buy all the volumes, I couldn't wait and bought and read all six volumes of the French version. I also like the covers of the French version more. I don't want to spoil the ending for anybody, though. Anyway, great series. I really liked how it kept the same intensity pretty much the entire way. A couple of my favorite moments in the series are in the later volumes, actually.
Speaking of Umezu, I was wondering what others though about his other works. I've only read a volume of Scary Book (Faces) and didn't really like it that much, but it's a shame that Dark Horse discontinued the series. I've heard great things about Baptism, and I want to get all four volumes, but buying manga from France is expensive, so I'm wondering if anybody has read it. |

Seems that Umezu is having himself a bit of neighbor trouble. Knowing his eccentric music career and general wacky antics, I can't say I'm surprised.

I always love hearing about his wacky antics. For a man who writes some seriously scary stuff, I'm always surprised to see pictures and hear about his personal life. |

Hmm... this forum's been dead for a while.
![]() ![]() In volume 7, with out revealing to much, we finding see the end of the flash flood and find out what happened to Saki and the rest of the girls. We'll see a strange fungus growing in the plants that acts almost like a drug or something! We finally learn another name of one of the prime ministers running the school with Sho, he is called Otsaki or something and he is that fat kid with the trousers and tomato style air. Also, a cult will form and strange freaky looking monster will show up! That's pretty much it about what I can say about this volume without revealing anything too revealing. There are only 3 chapters in it though. A website called mangalife.com also has the official review for it out! They rewarded volume 7 an A. Volume 6 recieved a B+, volume 1 recieved a B, and Volume 3 recieved an A. Talk about a great series with these grades! ![]() |
