Well, it's recently been marked for an airdate in France, with the series still planned to air in Japan sometime this year or early next year. The series will premiere in France on Camal +, airing on October 20th, 2007 at 3:05pm.

I'm not quite sure what the story is about, given my knowledge on the comics is next to nothing, but from the trailers released, it seems to be about Valerian and Laureline trying to find out as to why the Earth has disapeared.

Here was a recently released trailer for the series: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8_TCLJsaCkA

(Possible Pitch Trailer for an english dub is available here.)

I'm actually looking forward to this. Hopefully this holds up to the same level as past co-productions.

The animation seems to be top notch, though the mouth flaps seem to be a bit... "stiff", as one would say. The characters themself look like a mixture of western and japanese anime designs. Charles Vaucelles apparently did the original character models, while Makoto Uno was one of the two (I forget the other) who re-work character designs for the anime. Though, I really don't see why some people are making complaints about the designs. I thought the original production models for the series were worse than the final designs.

According to moonphase, Eiichi Sato directed the series. Philippe Vidal as well is listed as a director on various french sites.
