I'm sorry if someone already made a thread like this, but I didn't see one Sad

ANIME DVDS

I have been able to find many manga great retailers, but when it comes to anime DVDs, video stores seem to be a mixed bag around here...

Rasputin Music (Berkeley) - A nice selection of older DVD releases

Comic Relief (Berkeley) - A bit less Rasputin's selection (they are EXCELLENT for manga though).

Stand Up Comics (North of Berkeley) - Very little. Mostly old stuff. The clerk told me they stopped stalking anime because nobody buys it Sad )

Virgin (SF Union Square) - A fair selection, could have more and more recent stuff

Borders (SF Union Square) - like... 3 dvds... lol (It's a much much better place for manga)

Anime V (Berkeley) - A nice selection... But they don't let you pick up the DVDs and look at them, they're behind the counter... Also the store is full of shipment boxes and it's hard to walk around in.

Frys (South Bay locations) - Huge selection of anime, best I've seen so far. It is impossible to get to Fry's on public transit though.

Best Buy - Nice selection, but I was more impressed by Fry's

Japan Town (SF) - It's been a while sinse I've been there. I remember the stores being a lot better for music and manga shopping. I didn't see a lot of videos. I may not have been looking in the right area though.

MANGA

There's plenty to choose from...

Comic Relief (Berkeley) - Excellent selection of manga. Because they are not a retail chain, they still have some older titles that you can't find on big chain shelves anymore. And they also have current releases as well. Comic Relief is known for being a big supporter of independent comics, so you might want to check them out just for that too.

Half Price Books (Berkeley) - Right next to Comic Relief Smile. When you walk in, turn to your right and underneath the old records you'll find manga. Pre-owned and marked down 50%. There's usually nothing wrong with the books other than you know someone else has read them before. They have an eclectic selection of Korean, Japanese, and English language manga. Old anime magazines too. Yaoi is in behind a glass case in the adult section

Stand Up Comics (El Cerrito north of Berkeley) - A nice well displayed selection of manga. Lots of fantasy and shoujo stuff. Don't miss all the BOME figures they sell too Wink

Barnes & Noble (El Cerrito north of Berkeley) - This is the closest retail book store you can get to in the Berkeley area (Berkeley is stingy about retail stores in their town). Most of you probably already know that Barnes & Noble usually has a well-sized selection of manga. The other Barnes & Noble is in Oakland.

Borders (SF Union Square) - Big big selection of manga. A great place to pick up something new, or a volume in a series you can't find at any other store. Watch out though, the manga section is usually crowded with kids reading and you have to walk over them heh..

Virgin (SF Union Squre) - A kind of sad selection of manga. It's worth a glance though. It's on the 3rd floor.

Japan Town (SF) - A couple stores that are great places to buy japanese language manga and light novels of all sorts.

Please feel free to add to the list! I'm especially interested in DVD retailers.

For those planning on anime shopping in the SF Bay area, I hope this list helps. It's labor day weekend, so there's probably plenty of sales to take advantage of.
