Ppls that likes anime tend to like video games, and most of my friends that have ps3 like to watch anime. I stopped buying DVD anime for a while, because I dont want to shell out the money again when I have to rebuy the whole set in blu ray.
For new series like code geass, gundam 00 and gurren lagaan, I hope they release it in blu ray and dvd simultanelouly for the 2 groups, onse that are waiting until blu ray is more afforable, and ones that are dying to see it in thier intented viewing experience. The newer shows mentioned before were premiered on hi-vision and they were created in 720p, which will benefit the most from the new hi-di. The HD/blu ray anime that have been released so far are mostly old series with remastered HD version. I rather see the new show in blu ray first because it will benefit the most because the show was designed with widescreen and 720p in mind, and the old shows can release slowly. |

It'll be a little while longer yet before we really see the US anime industry fully support Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. While it looks like the entertainment industry as a whole might be leaning towards Blu-Ray, a relatively small part of that greater whole, the anime industry is better off letting the big guns fight it out first. The anime industry is already struggling badly with trying to keep people interested in buying anime in any format and with HD still being considered a new and high-end technology there are still many, many non-adaptors, not the type of thing they're quite ready to go into full force. We'll probably continue to see random movies go into HD, but even American TV series haven't made the move to HD yet. Anime was a fairly late in going from VHS to DVD and that was during the early days of the anime boom. Now when the future of domestic anime distribution is becoming uncertain it isn't likely that we'll see them make the leap any time soon.

Eh, no offense but there wouldn't be THAT much of a difference between blu ray and regular DVD anime.. just price difference maybe. I'm going to stick to buying DVD anime probably until something noticeably better than blu ray and hd comes out.

I can't wait until the format war is over and we have ONE HD format. If Blu-ray wins I hope the numerous series that have been released in Japane in Blu-ray get released over here rather quickly although I can't say I'm looking forward to buying anything in my collection again even if it is in hi-def. Unless it's a series I really like.

With Warner going exclusive with Blu-ray the "war" does have an end in sight.
I think the only non-HD show I watched in 2007 was the G4 productions Attack of the Show and X-Play. Everything else that I followed (Chuck, Heroes, Pushing Daisies, Journeyman, and a handful of others) were aired in HD, so I believe it is fair to say that American series have made the move. There are a couple of series that were not originally aired in HD, but were mastered in HD (like Rescue Me, and Battlestar Gallactica) but I picked up the HD-DVD and Blu-ray editions which look great. Anime on the other hand did take much longer to be released in the States. I remember by 2000 I had a decent DVD collection, but only a fraction of them were anime titles. This is no surprise considering that anime is a very small fraction of the DVD market here. If you look at the amazon best selling DVDs list you will rarely see a title (usually Miyazaki) breaking the top 500 lists. If you look at the the best selling high def titles anime (like Freedom, and other BVUSA) has traditionally been at the very bottom of the list. |

Isn't the only released blu-ray anime "Dragon Ball Z: Broly Double Feature" and "Paprika"?

There is also Tekkon Kinkreet, Wings of Honneamise, SOS Metro Tokyo Explorers. and Jin-Roh for Blu-ray, as well as Freedom for HD-DVD. The Initial D live action movie and new Appleseed are available for pre-order.
There are a bunch of titles available in Japan which share the same region code as the US. Many of these titles like Innocence and many of the Bandai VIsual releases also have the English subs and dubs included. I'm considering on buying the Utawarerumono box set which is priced similarly to most non highdefinition R2 releases and includes sub and dubs. |

I knew a lot of those shows were recorded and broadcast in HD, but I didn't realize they were released on HD format discs yet. After all, having an HD TV isn't the same as having an HD player, a lot of people only have the one and settle for HD-TV. Emerje |

Even if the format war does get resolved among the major studios, there's still no guarantee that we'll see high-def anime released here on a regular basis, according to a mini-essay on animeondvd:
I also hope that high-def anime becomes commonplace in the future. Not so much for my own sake, as I don't plan to get into it for awhile. (I didn't own a DVD player until 2001, after all.) No, I hope that legitimate high-def releases become available to solve the problem of "Why should I buy 640x480 DVDs when I've got these 1280x720 HDTV fansubs?" |

No offense, if you cant get the difference between blu ray and regular dvd anime, you need to get your eyes check or maybe you need to get a good hdtv instead. Something better than blu ray is not going to happened for a very long time, the max resolution for hdtv at the moment is 1080p, something better than blu ray wont be out for a long time.
I just checked yesasia, most of the R2 blu ray is around 100 a pop and the Utawarerumono is 500, a very crazy price, but if there is a GITS:STC and 2nd GIG blu ray set, I probably buy it on the spot without thinking too. |

Actually, I'm going to agree that i don't see that much of a difference ( when it comes to animation. live action is a completely different beast). However, i'm watching on a ps3, so i'm making my comparison between a dvd upscaled over the hdmi cable and a blu ray version of paprika, tekkonkreet and jin-roh. But that being said, there was little to no difference in the video quality to me. |

Well, that all depends on the resolution of the original masters, and also to a certain extent on the source material itself. Traditional 'cel' animation recorded onto film and then remastered (i.e. telecined) in HD could improve quite a bit as long as the film is in good condition and they do it 'wet gate' or use something like GRACE on it. However, things that have been produced digitally may or may not benefit. For instance, animation produced from cels that had been digitally scanned won't improve much unless the original scanning was done at a sufficiently high resolution. On the other hand, something that was produced entirely by 3D CGI could improve in quality if it was re-rendered at HD resolution (or of course, if it had been rendered in HD to start with and then downsampled for PAL/NTSC). The other major benefit from HD is a higher bitrate coupled with more efficient encoding. This reduces or eliminates the 'blockiness' seen sometimes in extreme action sequences and visual effects like explosions or smoke. You won't see much benefit due to bitrate/compression enhancements if these types of visual elements are lacking. Oh, and BTW, as far as I can see the format wars are about over - spoiler[HD-DVD dies] |

I hope that ADV considers giving a BD boxset release to Gurren Lagann after the show finishes its initial DVD release. I would definitely be willing to pay a bit of a premium on it, but I would much rather see it go straight to boxset. It would definitely be a good series to experiment with.

Thats true...
Another good candidate for a BD drive is Makoto Shinkais latest movie. It was produced in HD, but even the R2 version was made in DVD. I honestly think that 480p cannot cope with that visuals.... |
