In a longrunning thread on why manga outsells superhero comics over on the Comics Journal board, Viz editor Jason Thompson speaks his mind and sez he feels safe speaking freely since he's confident that manga fans aren't reading the Journal messboard. Shaenon is a key Shonen Jump editor. Why they post there and not here, I dunno.

Cus I'm too lazy to use their forum.

I don't see that as a specific sign that the American comic book industry is somehow dropping the ball, unless he means to imply that American comic books should all come with video game demos attached to them.

Actually, Marvel said they're going to pack their comics into cd-roms and dvd's.

Let's face it, Marvel and DC Comics simply do not have the resources and cross-media name recognition at their disposal to compete with these Japanese juggernauts who can use games like Yu-ei-e-gouhe to attract the youth.

Um, DC's a subsidy of Time Warner, so that's ridiculous. And Marvel has a steady fanbase who will continue to buy their comics long after Yu Gi Oh's finished. Plus Marvel makes enough money from product tie-ins and movie adaptations that they can actually afford smaller comic sales than Jump.

In the short term, Oni Press and people like Jane Irwin and the Pinis will be the winners I think

Assuming they can meet deadlines as frequently as the majors. (*cough* Antarctic Press *cough*)

Jason Thompson:

On the other hand, NEWTYPE is theoretically a "reviews/criticism/news" magazine. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, it mimics the style of the Japanese NEWTYPE in being primarily glossy hype for new products. Such as the products of A.D. Vision, America's largest anime producer, and publisher of NEWTYPE.

And Animerica doesn't do the same with Viz? Hell, NewType could've sabotaged sales of the Eva tv show with its negative review of the movies, and yet NewType printed it anyway. Hell, if I had a dollar for everytime Rumiko Takahashi is mentioned in an Animerica article...

Oh, and M. Cavallaro, you rock.

DC is indeed owned by Time Warner, but that doesn't mean they have all the resources of Time Warner at their disposal. From what I hear T/W is keeping DC on life support as a sort of R and D lab to create and maintain marketable characters. DC comics haven't been noteworthy moneymakers for T/W, but it is a good loss-leader. As such they want it around, but don't really care if it rules the comics world; they just want it to generate potential franchises at a relatively low cost. As for Marvel, it's actually been teetering on the brink of bankrupcy for years now, and it's only movie income that's keeping it alive at all. That steady fanbase is pretty dinky, not nearly enough to keep the company alive.
