Nice review.
It's terribly unfortunate that GaoGaiGar has been put on hiatus after volume 5 came out. The thing with GGG is, despite the fact that the first five discs are definitely pretty silly and formulaic, the show becomes fantastically good after that. It's still got the same general style, but there's actually a massive dose of plot and characterization, and all-around kickassery until the end of the series, and that doesn't even begin to describe GaoGaiGar FINAL (which definitely isn't aimed at kids). |

While the review was generally good some of the criticism seem misplaced. In essence various sections of the review criticise the content for its lack of maturity, however as the show's target audience is children this criticsm hardly seems fair.

We GaoGaiGar fans keep saying it, and with the hiatus I know it doesn't seem like it, but that 180 does happen. I think the review was very fair. I love GaoGaiGar to death but in all honesty it is a show for children and a big ode to mecha, so those who don't like mecha (i.e. most US fans) probably won't enjoy it because of it's simplicity (these days straightforward seems like too novel of an idea, cause as we know complexity equates to intelligence). Also for what it's worth GaoGaiGar is the brainchild from the guys over at Takara (same guys behind Transformers) so I can forgive similarities. If you think things are ridiculous now just keep watching once MB decides to continue the release.

Unfortunately, we need to wait until the vile Voltron finishes its release before GGG resumes its run.
Man, I really hope Media Blasters changes their mind about the dub issue. |

As a Giant Robot lover from the first generation, I watched and loved Go Nagai's Mazinger Z, for those of you that don't know, thats the Father of the Giant Robo Genre and other worrks like Gordian Warrior, Magno Robo Gakeen, Steel Jeeg, Daiku Maryu Gaiking in the 70's and 80's, so that should give me some cred for what I'm abouyt to say.
What's stupid about lovin a show that's basically a morality tale, Good vs Evil, action, adventure, a sense of wonder, epic characters in epic situations, with the fate of thw city/country/continent/planet/universe in the balance? so storytelling might be on the simple side but when has simple = stupid?, it might not have 20 twists and turns or be a study of the meaning of Life, the universe and everything, it just has to be fun. Why the US doen't have a love for Giant robots, maybe it's that large chasm between Jim Terry's Force Five, Voltron or that travesty called Tranzor Z  other places where Giant Robot animation was more prevalent, still support the genre rabidly like for example Italy and we all know the story where Ufo Robo Grendizer was the #1 show in France(as Goldorak).
And little kids are the heroes in the sub-genre known as Brave shows (the thing Takara had to come up with after TransFormers bit the dust it in Japan in the early 90's), your standard Giant Robot hero is at least a teenager or young adult, GaoGaiGar is a Giant Robot show, bound by the trappings of a Brave show. I can't beleve that the genre that served as the 1st wave of bringing anime to the world is treated so off handedly... The Genre is alive an well in Japan, abandoning the destruction that Evangelion and their ilk have caused to it, that's why recently shows like MazinKaiser, New Getter Robo, Kotetsu Shin Jeeg, Gaiking: Legend of the Darku Maiyu, and Reideen have come to the airways as tributes to the beloved shows of yesteryear and I wish the R1 companied did license more of them. And for those of you saying that Voltron is Vile, Thanks to Voltron we're getting Armored Fleet DaiRugger XV and Hundred Beast king GoLion in R1. For the reviewer King of Braves GaoGaiGar might be a C title, for me is an A+, a love letter to why I watch and love anime. |

I was mildly irritated by this review... then I read further, realized the reviewer hasn't even SEEN the series yet, and laughed hard
To all who haven't caught on yet - wait for the mid to late 20s, when the Tokyo crisis happens. You won't be disappointed. |

The US audience, the one that was weaned on the deconstruction of the mecha genre in Evangelion. It'd be like Watchmen being the first superhero comic a person ever read. With their first exposure a deconstruction, playing it straight becomes impossible. |
