Brief metropolis query

Is Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis a retelling of the 1927 film of the same name? I haven't seen either, nor have I read about either of them, but from the pics I've seen of both of them they look like they're similar in some aspect.

Not a retelling, justt somewhat inspired by it. Don't expect much similarity overall.

Also, the animated movie differs in some respects from Osamu Tezuka's manga on which it's based.
