OK, I usually try to avoid FFVII conversations because they usually don't ammount to much more than fanboy drivel. However, I loved the game and am not ashamed to admit it. It's because of this that I'm just a little excited that Square Enix has announced a Final Fantasy VII sequal in the form of a CGI OAV movie!
(from RPGfan.com) "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, pictured below, will be an entirely new DVD movie title, whose story will take place two years after the events of Final Fantasy VII and explore what has happened since Cloud and friends saved the world from Sephiroth and the meteor. It will also mark the return of popular FFVII protagonist Cloud Strife and his old foe Sephiroth." Magazine scan from RPGfan.com with images Also Magic Box has some additional info (length and release estimate) along with what apears to be a promo poster. This has a lot of potential, especially being a rare japanese CGI movie. Emerje |

FFVII was my first foray into RPG's (having only seen and hated the original FF on the NES as my basis for not liking the Genre) and have since embraced it as my second favorite kind of game (next to fighters).
So, there's a soft spot in my heart fore ole' VII. I can think of at least 15 people off the top of my head that will be waiting for this with bated breath. This deffinately makes it on my "Asimilate all info about" list. *Sits in corner, staring with bloodshot eyes into the darkness* |

I wonder which studio will handle it, of course, that's assuming it will be animated. There was no doubt in my mind that it would be until I saw that pic Emerje posted. Regardless, I can't wait.

I'm pretty sure Square is gonig to handle it inhouse, probably by some of the same people that have been doing their game cutsceens all along. Since it's going to be CGI rather tha cell animated they deffinatly have the resources to do it themselves.
I can see this movie serving 2 purposes: 1) Give the fans something they've wanted all along, more FFVII, and if it does well perhaps do a new game. 2) Make up for Spirits Within by giving us an action packed "neoclassical" styled FF movie with swords and magic rather than love and science. Either way the concept is a win-win situation as long as it's well put together and not rushed to make a quick buck off of the rabid fans. Judging by what we're seeing so far, I'd say they're off to a good start. Emerje |

It will be very nice to have some closure to FFVII, the ending was good but didn't answer the question of what happend to the characters. So if this movie manages to accomplish that then it will be successful from my perspective. However, I have heard rumors that Square is planning a FF that is either set in the same world as FFVII or that is part of the story line, has anyone here heard facts regarding this?

Well, Sony and Square did build that huge CGI Studio in Honolulu, and they are going to want to get as much use out of it as possible.
I'm thinking that this FFVII flick and X-2 is Square-Enix testing the waters for either sequels or remakes (The infamous FF7, 8 and 9 remakes for the PS2 that never were) of their properties. Fans have been clamoring for years to get more closure on VII. And its the logical choice for a new sequel. If these two things are successful (and there's a very good chance they will be), we may be seeing more of this stuff in the near future. Fun. Syker Seven |

Well, I was just talking to my friend today about the movie, and he said he read on a forum somewhere that they are making a new game that lets you be a mercenary for Shinra. I however do not belive it, just some little rumor that I thought I would share.

Well, there have been many, many, many rummors about sequals, remakes, and prequals, and side stories for Final Fantasy VII, but this is the first time something has actually been made offical by Square Enix.
However, during a Q&A session at TGS they did say that they weren't planning to do a new FFVII remake since the old version is still playable on the PS2. Emerje |

Like Emerje said... there were a slew of rumors floating around before the Tokyo Game Show. Many people expected a new game sequel, but it turns out it was a OAV they were planning. Personally, I'm kind of glad its not a new game. Though I'm looking forward to X-2, I don't want to see the Final Fantasy series degrade into a bunch of sequels. Part of what keeps the series fresh is a brand new story line each time (though there are links between I, V, and IX). Not to mention the Square does some sweet CGI... especially with character designs and facial expressions. Just think of it as an extended FMV. |

I'm rather happy about this ova, and I guess you could say I'm hoping for them to do this to more then jut FF7. FF7, allthough it was good, was far from my favorite of the FF games.

Yeah, Final Fantasy 7 gets it's movie. Fans can rest easy knowing it be a year or two before it hits the States. Now maybe they will fill in the blackhole called Final Fantasy 8. 7 was okay for Playstation start in the world that has come to be known as Final Fantasy, but give me good old 4 or 6 any day.

If this is all they plan to do with FFVII I think that most of the greater fan community will be happy if the movie is good and brings closure. Also, I agree that it is pointless to remake FFVII with better graphics for PS2 since the orginal version plays on the PS2. So with any luck the movie will bring the closure to the story and Square will continue to put the random FFVII in-jokes in thier games. |

Maybe longer. Heck, the rumors are flying out of people mouths like the flying monkeys in the Wizard of OZ. They all smell rotten. So, much like the X-Files, "Trust no one." Wait for a PR for Square/Enix saying a date. Heck, FF:SW toke a long time come out. And remember, as of right now, it's an OVA, ie: it won't be in theathers unless there is more hype about then Metrix 3, ie: like that whould ever happen. |

That's really great news! FF7 was the second RPG I've ever played. Xenogears was the first....incidentally I always though Xenogears would make a great anime. Anyways, I prefer the OAV sequel idea to the game sequel, and perhaps this will bring them more gill than Spirits within.
I have one pet peeve though, I don't like the character designs. Too reminiscent of FFX. I would have preferred the designs they used in Kingdom Hearts. Sephiroth REALLY looks like a girl...Oh well |
