Hi all,

I'm just throwing the net out there right now and seeing what I get. I'm looking for any information about liscencing anime/manga for american distribution. I hope some day to start my own anime subbing/distro company. I know there is a lot of competition out there. Anyone know where I could start my research? I figured I'd turn to the internets most trusted anime news source first off.

First you need gobs of money, in the tens of millions.
Second, you need to get japanese partners. That is the big thing the American companies have. Many are owned by Japanese distro companies, or in one case, owns Japanese companies. The popular and good anime are now commonly kept in the family so to speak. The big thing you can do if you want your own company is to buy one of the minor ones and market agressively. Coastal would of been a good choice.

If you are a student or other young professional without significant resources, I suggest getting a job in the industry and going independant after you build up the proffesional contacts and skill required. The contacts are key, as knowing who to talk to is the only way to work. If you really can talk to the heads of studios and get them to sell you the region distro, then and only then can you do it. And to convince them, you need a DVD manufactoring plant who will give you the credit to publish your discs. And to get the credit you need money and a bank to back you. Todo that you need the contacts and game plan with a dub studio set up and ready for it. Mastery of Japanese helps so much that with out it, only with great personally riches or ten years in the industry can you do it.

I've got an idea! ANN could have their own anime liscensing company (like Anime Nation has), and the forum members can do the dubs and the scriptwriting!

I'll shut up now.

First acquisition: Kodomo no Omocha. Cool

Come on, it's about time somebody got it. I mean, Marmalade Boy got licensed after nine years of waiting... Confused

Flame of Recca's a long time coming, too.
