Just going to copy and paste what I wrote when I posted this on the main Hetalia Community:
Yeah because doing a small printing so that a handful of fans can get Volume 3 and screwing everyone else by making a relicensing take even longer sounds bloody fantastic. ಠ_ಠ Because that's sure what it comes across like to me. Sorry, I'm annoyed and wants fandom to think before they rejoice by default. I'm not 100% sure how licensing works, but I'm pretty sure Hetalia can't be relicensed if its still being printed elsewhere - even for a limited run/printing like Levy is suggesting. He's opening vague on the details too, so he could mean just an ebook release and not even physical copies. Food for thought.
tl;dr I'm very cynical and probably more upset than I should be about this.

Copy-pasted and edited from my post on the Facebook post--
I like the idea and I love Hetalia, but this offer honestly kind of upset me. Instead of publishing a volume from an UNFINISHED and ONGOING series, I'd MUCH rather see the LAST volume of Saiyuki Reload. Obviously we're not gonna be seeing Reload Blast or Gaiden from TP, but the least they can do is complete Saiyuki Reload. There was only one more volume! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ /rant

^This too. It would make so much more sense if they used these resources to published the final volume of a series like Saiyuki Reload or Alice in the Country of Hearts.

The problem with that is Hetalia has the fans to back up the number of copies, even if it's a smaller release, and every copy or so has to be per-ordered or whatever, people will FLOCK to it. There are fans yes of Saiyuki Reload, but not nearly in the league of Hetalia for a disbanded company to consider sort of releasing a version of the already translated product to hoards of eager fans. Money's not in it.
And yeah, I realize this is holding up the rights for other US companies to acquire and re-release the manga. But I still want my volume 3.
And the reason they are probably considering this is, besides the insane number of fans, I have a feeling they probably already had finished all the work on it, considering the last volume was supposed to come out only a month after the original cut-off date.
I am waiting for company X (for some reason, I feel like Yen) to pick up the rights, and I will buy all the volumes again from them, but in the meantime, hell yeah I would love a volume 3!

I pretty much feel that Levy's just messing with our heads, and is hoping to hear adorations and squeals of glee as the Hetalia fans get their much wanted vol. 3. (and looking at the FB page, it's pretty much what he's getting)
While the rest of us just sit here stewing with our almost completed series, minus one or two volumes. I'm more or less fed up with his schtick.

While I'd probably buy a TP-released vol.3, I'm not over the moon at the news because Hetalia is one of those sure-bet license rescues, i.e. I never doubted that someone would put out more if TP didn't. As far as I'm concerned Mr. Levy can just fade into obscurity now and let someone else start re-releasing the series sooner rather than later.

Wow, is he serious? This really pisses me off. I bought the first two volumes and love myself Hetalia but a limited release, really? Trying to squeeze even a little more money out of the US fans? And of course your other series don't matter, only the cash-cow is worth the effort.

I didn't even think of that. If I wanted to read Hetalia on a computer, I'd go to Hidekazu's official webpages. Don't do this Stu. Just fade from existence already so I can lick my wounds from your titles being out of print.

Essentially copying and pasting what I posted:
Quote: | As much as I love Hetalia and would love to get Volume 3 on my shelf, a limited release really seems unfair, especially with how many fans there are of the series. Not everyone may be able to afford the volume when/if it gets released, and after the copies are gone, it leaves those fans unable to get it upon release essentially trying to buy a price-gouged copy off of Amazon or eBay just to get the next volume. Don't do that to your fans. The fairest option is to let someone else take over the license for Hetalia and let them take it over, so that way everyone can have a fair chance at getting the third (and eventually fourth and beyond) volume. Same with your other titles, like Alice in the Country of Hearts, Gakuen Alice, Maid-Sama!, Butterfly, and Chibisan Date. It's the fairest option and the least you can do for your loyal fans who've been waiting anxiously for an English release. |
Of course, the best option would be for Stu to re-open Tokyopop's English publishing, even if it's just online and doing print-on-demand, but that'll likely never happen. x.x

Not a Hetalia fan myself but I also thought of this-do you think some people will order books just so they can try to resell them for ridiculous prices on Ebay/Amazon? I agree, Mr. Levy should just go away, he's done enough damage to manga fans already. Hetalia will go on without him.

He needs to leave manga alone. He so casually dumped the business back in the spring, and is now hitting up the well again?
Leave Hetalia alone, Stu. It needs to find a new home with a company who can bring the old volumes back in print so that they're affordable, and so that we'll see volume 4 and onwords one day. Hetalia fans were extremely supportive of the publication and it sold buckets, and they deserve to have it treated properly. I understand the squee! of possibly getting it back, but this doesn't help Hetalia. It only helps one person.
This just reeks of desperation. I hope Gentosha is smart enough to treat this property better than to let Stu use it as some sort of fundraiser/HEY GUYS DON'T YOU MISS ME?!?! ego-ride.
Yeah, I'm still upset about Tokyopop, and this attempt at rising a zombie!Tokyopop pisses me off.

Stu, get your ink stained hands off of Hetalia. Let another company license it.

Call me crazy, but this seems like a first step in an attempt to get back into publishing manga. Not a big surprise, because it seems to be his only profitable skill.

Here is my little conspiracy theory:
This is a steaming pile of poo.
Stu has a bunch of leftover Volumes 1& 2 and can see what kind of prices he can get off of the re-sellers market. Since ONLY fans who have bought volume 1 & 2 are going to buy three, he will know exactly what his print run should be. If he even follows through with a Volume 3. Leftovers? There is always the resellers market.
My suggestion to Hetalia fans: Don't fall for this!! Wait for Stu to relinquish his license and a legitimate publisher to license it.
