Is this a stand alone or need to watch the Robotech series to watch it?

Shadow Chronicles is supposed to be a stand alone but, actually the storyline doesn't do a very good job of getting you up to date on past events. It sort of assumes you know past history of Robotech, so watching the series and Sentinels might be good before you watch Shadow Chronicles.

Yes, definitely watch the show. The movie has more of a pick-up-where-we-left-off vibe that will confuse people who have no clue regarding the Robotech storyline.

I won't disagree with that statement. It was a good movie for fans of the series but, as a jumping on point it wasn't very solid. It seems like a last swan song for fans of Robotech to be honest. It took them over 20 years to produce a viable sequel. Robotech II was great but, left you hanging at the end and, only through the comics from Eternity and Academy or the Novels from Del Rey could you get most of the story. The only bad thing is that the comics followed one continuity and the novels followed another. The novels, I think, finished the story but the comics were canceled after a while without resolving the story. Robotech 3000 was also aborted as well as the other planned sequel (can't remember the name). You also had to get some of the story for Shadow Chronicles through the DC/Wildstorm comics prequel. Neat idea but, you really have to read the comics to get a better idea as to what's going on in the film. Really, like I said it seems like a last swan song for fans of the series and isn't very accessible to people not in the know. It's kinda like what they did with the whole Matrix thing...they want you to read the comics, watch the Animatrix and play the video games all to get the full storyline in the sequels films. Even George Lucas assumed most people had seen the Clone Wars cartoon series when Star Wars Episode III came out. You never understood how certain characters ended up the way they did unless you saw the Clone Wars minis on Cartoon Network. So, it was kind of a bad move on the producers' part for Robotech: Shadow Chronicles to assume people have seen and read everything prior to the film. Even that one left you hangin' in the end Who knows if we'll see another one?

I haven't seen The Shadow Chronicles yet but it does concern me that I may get confused. I have seen the series and read the books but its been years since then.
