Tell your dad that you don't like them.
One question though, the "Messiah" that you mentioned, does the story starts off with this boy (who have glasses) found a love letter in his locker? |

Oh I though you're talking about "Watashi no Messiah-sama". Never mind then. Yeah just tell your dad. |

Funny thing is that it appears your "Manga Messiah" actually is Japanese.
I think your preconceptions with American comics are dead wrong. There are certainly some American or British comics that are absolutely amazing and just as good, if not better than some manga. Just because it is Japanese does not automatically make it awesome. Also, the mere fact that you are writing off a comic just because it reads in Western style is rather silly. Some of the best manga are translated Western style to appeal to wider audiences. For example, just about any Osamu Tezuka series. You yourself said they are not that bad. Which means that you are enjoying them, but you are upset by the fact that they are not "manga". Again, being a real manga does not automatically make it awesome. Give yourself a chance to appreciate something else and you may be pleasantly surprised. Your dad is merely trying to compromise with you by getting you something he thinks is appropriate but is still within your interests. At least he is trying to work with you and not merely writing off all comic books. You should be glad that your parents care so much about your well-being and that they are willing to compromise with you. |

READ THE NEW BLUE BEETLE! *pimppimp* It's gotten a fair amount of my manga-only friends to give American comics a chance (actually, they take my trades off of me as soon as I've read them) and is amazingly good. Teenaged superhero deals with having a legacy to live up to, school, other superheroes, and has the greatest supporting cast ever. Or there's always Scott Pilgrim (manga? comic? It gets shelved everywhere!) and The Five Fists of Science if mainstream superheroes don't float your boat. And if you like romance, there's My Faith in Frankie, although depending on how old you are, you may not like that. It deals with religion, love, and beliefs (belief in everything) in a balanced way. More on topic though, would this 'Manga Messiah' happen to be [LINK TO SCANLATIONS REMOVED -TK]? ETA Oh, haha. You said yours was in color. The link is pretty awesome anyway though. If completely nonsensical. |

There are some incredible American graphic novels. Godly, I should say.
I actually started reading graphic novels when I was 14, and didn't get much into manga until 4 years later. Most of the really good American graphic novels are aimed more towards adults (aka 18-32 year olds), as opposed to the generic shounen and shoujo shlock that fills the Border shelves. But I think anyone can appreciate the artistry beyond stuff like The Fountain, David Mack's Kabuki (the "Metamorphisis" volume especially), and...well, all my collection is back at my mom's house. But these two books are like page after page of paintings, they're really beautiful and show great artistic maturity. Plus all the great underground stuff that would never get serialized even in a seinen mag like Afternoon. Sure, Japan has it's Shintaro Kago's and Suehiro Marou's, but we never get them translated so that doesn't count. tl;dr American comics aren't like manga, but they greatly surpass manga in some areas |

Read some goddamn Watchmen, Sandman, Maus, and Transmetropolitan and stop being an elitist. Both cultures produce epic stuff.
And just tell your dad, look, Christianity is cool and all, but any time you precede a word describing ANY form of entertainment with the word "Christian," it's guaranteed to be absolutely terrible. Except for The Prince of Egypt. That movie was awesome. |

I have no idea how old you are, but if you want to see an interesting take on Christianity (the main character is a youth minister), and are old enough not to have your parents censor what you read, I heartily recommend 'American Virgin'. The art is lovely and the story is one of the most interesting and thoughtful I've read in a long time.
Hells yes that movie was awesome. ![]() (Transmetropolitan icon! ![]() |

Do you mean Preacher? IIRC Preacher is an American graphic novel and Priest is Korean. |

Your right. This guy at a comic book store told me to get priest. It looked goth which isn't my thing so I just picked it up and put back down. I was probably fooled by the format which probably wasn't flipped (can't really remember).
Anyway I was just kiddin cause priest does seem to be alot about demons from hell and shotguns and alot less about jesus. I'm atheist so I can't speak for the quality. But here's what I could find online. Serenity, Goofyfoot Gurl by realbuzz studios. Seems to be it for christain manga other than what other people have already said. There's also a website called theproject.us (sorry don't know the site's policy on urls and I'll look it up rather than continue to be a dick) that seems to have christian reviews of popular manga your dad might find helpful. |
