Interesting, I can't find anywhere in the review, encylopedia entry, or news releases for Air Gear where anyone at ANN called Air Gear “Straight-up Cool.”

Yeah, I noticed that also. ANN's review does mention the "cool" factor a couple of times, but it never actually said "Straight-up Cool."
ADV also said in the past in that ANN said that This Ugly Yet Beautiful World was "GAINAX's best work since Evangelion" when that wasn't said in any of the reviews either. I don't know why ADV does that, but perhaps it's just because they can. |

The "Straight-Up Cool" comment comes from Bamboo Dong's Shelf Life column about vol. 1 (see here), so it is legit. Whether or not it was actually taken in context is another story, but that's been a promotional gimmick for ages.
