Subs only on the SE.
How upsetting.

Works for me, since I have my doubts about the English dub. One can still watch the dub in broadcast order eventually anyway, if they're willing to deal with the hassle of switching between DVDs all the time.

Actually, other sources who had this news before ANN, have stated that the sub-only broadcast order DVDs are extras. Those will also be on 3 DVDs instead of the 4 for the dubbed chronological order DVDs.
They'll come with LE sets 2-4.

Worst marketing decision ever. Part of the fun of watching Haruhi is watching it out of order trying to figure it out!

Wow, yeah... I noticed this yesterday. I am happy with this situation- unless the special edition is an unreasonable price. Here's some news that didn't make the summary, though:
February 25, 2007 0100 PST
Also announced yesterday at New York Comic Con's Haruhi panel were the Haruhi CDs (a lot of them) coming over both included in the special editions, and also sold separately. There are quite a few CDs, a more complete list will be available soon as well as a detailed explanation of which episodes are on which DVDs.
P.S.: Splitter, as stated in the article, the Japanese DVDs are in the chronological order. The fact we're getting this at all is pretty cool, considering it's exclusive to North America.
P.P.S.: For the Special Bonus DVD, we are taking the Japanese DVD masters, arranging them in TV Broadcast order, and putting in the next episode previews in TV Broadcast order. This creates a DVD master version of the TV Broadcast ordering that does not exist anywhere else in the world.
I'm not complaining.

They didn't have a choice, if you actually read the explanation on ASOS, since Japan never got broadcast order DVDs, Bandai and Kadokawa USA had to fight to get the special editions.

Here's a quote from the asosbrigade.com page:
Quote: |
Regular Edition DVD will have English Dolby 5.1 Surround and the original Japanese audio with English subtitles
|
So it's just that the SE disks aren't dubbed.

Ugh. Now I'm not sure which one I'd want to order. Is it better to watch them chronologically or or in broadcast order? Maybe a poll is in order.

Not to fret, people. It appears they're doing what they did to GitS: SAC by making the Special Editions 2 discs each.
ASOS Brigade site wrote: | Special Edition Vol 2-4 will contain both the regular edition DVD and the bonus DVD (2 DVDs). |
Which leaves SE Vol.1 to have the first 4 episodes in chronological order (bilingual). And only if you really want to listen to the dub, you'll just have to switch discs to purposely go out of order.
But like a lot of people, I'm skeptic about the dub anyway, so it doesn't really matter to me. This is the perfect marketing setup for those who will prefer the Japanese track: watch it out of order on the bonus discs, then watch it back in order on the regular DVDs.

Im an idiot, so this has been confusing me:
So if we buy the DVD package that comes with the box and all the special stuff we will still get the dub right? It'll just come with an extra disc with the out of order episodes along with the dubbed dvd also.
Just want to make sure I have this right.....

As if the series itself didn't confuse me enough...now the way they are releasing it has me completely boggled.
Those tables on their website didn't help much...

There will be two versions to buy: Regular and Special Editions.
Regular will be a bilingual DVD with extras (on the DVD itself) and in chronological order.
Special will be 2 DVDs (a la Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex). It will have the Regular disc with the same stuff AND a Bonus DVD with the Japanese broadcast order. However, it will have no English dub and be Japanese audio with subtitles only. In addition, they'll probably throw in other material extras like a flashy box, postcards, keychains, or whatever.
SE Vol.1 will contain the first Regular DVD, a box, and all those goodies.
SE Vol.2-4 will contain the remaining Regular DVDs in chronological order (with both English and Japanese audio), but also include a second Bonus DVD that has the broadcast order (Japanese audio only).

Also note the extra DVD doesn't come with the first LE, just LE DVDs 2-4 will come with them. Putting that out there so you don't freak out if you get LE 1 and there's no extra DVD with it...
Why do I feel like I'm repeating myself...?
EDIT: Tony K. is fast with that edit button...

Okay, this really is totally messed up. So let me see if I get this strait.
If you want to watch ONLY the chronological order you would need to buy (at least) ONLY the Regular Edition DVDs volumes 1-4. (4 DVDs total)
If you want to to watch ONLY the broadcast order you would buy (at least) ONLY the Special Edition DVDs volumes 2-4. (3 DVDs total)
But if you wanted the option to watch EITHER the chronological order OR the broadcast order you would need to buy (at least) Regular Edition DVD volume 1 AND Special Edition DVDs volumes 2-4. (4 DVDs total)

Correct. So it's up to you whether or not you're a hardcore Haruhi fan . But if you get Regular Vol.1 only, but the rest of SE Vol.2-4, you won't have a box for the series. I think SE Vol.1 is the only one that will come with the artbox.
