I just recently got into Miyazaki's work. I had seen Princess Mononoke and liked it, but basically dismissed everything else as "children's fare". How wrong was I? A friend of mine force-fed me Spirited Away and I loved it.
I've heard lots of good stuff about Nausicaa (especially the manga), and I've been looking into it. Info on availability of the movie is sketchy at best. Not to mention I found out that its something Carl Macek and Harmony Gold got their hands on. (and I loathe them for what they did to Macross, splicing it into Robotech) Is the "Macekanized" version true to the original? If so, where in the world can I find it? I've had no luck on searches and I'm wary about Ebay. Secondly, is there a version released here (in the U.S.) that hasn't been touched by Harmony Gold? I really tried to find out on my own before I resorted to this, but I got nathan. Thanks in advance. Syker Seven |

I found it at Amazon.com under "Warriors of the Wind" in VHS. It has not been released stateside in DVD format. You may also want to try searching for it with the romanized Japanese title "Kaze no Tani no Naushika". Just be careful going through Ebay since you have a good chance of possibly getting a pirated copy. You may also like his other works such as "Laputa--Castle in the Sky" avaliable through Disney DVD or "My Neighbor Totoro" avaliable through Fox DVD. A good source to go to is www.nausicaa.net for Miyazaki films as well as other films from Studio Ghibli such as "Grave of the Fireflies"

Thanks Pitargo, I found it. 'Precianate the heads up.
Yeup, that's the Macek/Harmony Gold version, I do believe. I'll be amazed if it isn't hacked to pieces, but it's a start. Anyone else know if there's a release under a different company floating around out there? Syker Seven |

The bad news is twofold, there is no alternative release at this point and Warriors of the wind is significantly altered from Nausicaa. The good news is that BVHE / Disney has the rights to Nausicaa in North America, and with the current release of the movie on DVD in Japan, an unedited release from BVHE is expected sometime in the relatively enar future... say a year or so from now. This is pure speculation mind you, but very likely. |

Yeah, that's what I expect from ole' Carl and HG. Okay, I'll just stop bashing them now. Sorry. Spank you, Tempest. I appreciate the info. I'll be waiting with bated breath for BVHE/Disney's release. Seeing as how well Miyazaki's movies have been selling for them, I can't see why Disney wouldn't give this the go ahead, especially since I get the impression this is one of the bigger "fan favorites". They are re-releasing Nausicaa in Japan in November I believe. And Studio Ghibli releases in Japan tend to have English subtitles on them. Good ones at that. So even if it is a bit more expensive I'd certainly go for it. Nausicaa is an awesome movie. Probably my favorite at the moment of Miyazaki's works.

Uhm, maybe you already know Syker, but you can just read it. Miyazaki did the Nausicaa manga before the movie, available in four volumes right here in the US. I surely wouldn't want to hold my breath and wait to get ahold of this wonderful story.

If you are interested in other Ghibli works I personally recommend Whisper of the Heart, Only Yesterday and Ocean Waves/I Can Hear the Sea "Umi ga Kikoeru". Each film delves deeply into human relationships and the delicate nature of friendship, growth and love. I found each quite heartwarming and suitable for children, youths and adults alike. For additionally updated information on confirmed and estimated domestic and international release dates for titles, consider visiting: http://www.nausicaa.net/
Good luck! |

Malloaggie, I've already got the manga on order . It will be the first manga I've ever bought. I hated the idea of tacking another medium onto my already extensive list of hobbies, but If I'm going to continue to get some of the stories that I loved in anime, I'll have to start picking up some manga (Berserk comes to mind)
And thanks Mahoro, I'd never heard of those particular titles before. 'Precianate it |

While Robot Carnival is a series of shorts by different creators (think along the same lines as Animatrix), Miyazaki had no part in any of them. If he did, it wasn't anything significant. As for availability, the Streamline version still shows up in places like anime cons and old video stores. I know Super Techno Arts wan'ts so do a US release, but I don't think they've made an announcement yet. Emerje |

I disagree - this was one of the first Miayazaki/Ghibli Releases that I had the privilege of seeing, and I found it enchanting, poetic, and just amazing in terms of animation, story, and overall drama. It is definitely a great, great movie. V1cious, if you could just explain that statement, maybe we can discuss why you find it "boring". I and many others found this movie to be an awesome show to watch... and guess what: the manga collection is even better! |

cause almost nothing happens at all. i mean there's some cool action parts, but for the most part the movie just drags on. all all the enviormental babble started to give me a hedache. Nausicaa's annoying demeanor didn't help things either. |

You can also try [EDIT - Bootleg URL -C] and look under there top 20 best seller list. It's found through the Anime DVD link. It's a box set of most of the Study Ghibli anime that's been done.
