I should probably note first that I've only watched the first five episodes, so my response below isn't based on a complete viewing.

Isn't that the point? Katanagatari trades in the subversion of genre tropes; the Kyoto Ryu style itself is exemplary of that, as it reduces Shichika, quite literally, to a living--albeit lovable--weapon that responds to every whim of its wielder (much like, say, your average shounen protagonist ultimately never fails to defeat the bad guy, because the author doesn't want him to).

With the exception of the music score, I find all those grades too low. Not that anybody gives a crap, I'm sure, but here's how I would have scored this set:
Overall (sub) : A-
Story : A-
Animation : A
Art : A
Music : B+

Excellent review, Katanagatari is one of my favorite too. But yeah, the score seems a bit too low considered how much of a success this series is.

Amen to the "TOO MUCH DIALOGUE" call. I've watched the first three episodes so far, and of these the first two are an absolute chore to sit through. It's like the characters feel the need to say everything twice and run every joke to the ground! They were seriously dire.
Third episode was everything I hoped this show would be, though, so I'm real excited to see more and I plan to order the next set.

I tried to watch the first episode of this one but I found the art style way too off-putting. Yes, it's pretty, but from what I saw it severely limited the portrayal of actual facial expressions. This is probably the only time when art alone has been enough of a factor to make me stop watching but I just couldn't sit through another minute of those blank eyes and vacant faces.

I would "give a crap" if you explained why you think the story etc. deserves better grades. I've always thought the grading scale was rather meaningless, but if you would be willing to explain what you disagree with from the body of the review, I at least am always interested in hearing second opinions on shows I'm curious about.

@ vashfanatic - a very reasonable request. Normally, I would have done that but as it happened I only had about a minute before I had to leave for a gym training session, so I didn't have time to elaborate. Once I'm at home and have a chance to sit down and be detailed, I will do so. Katanagatari is a wonderful series that deserves as wide an audience as possible and I don't think that Carlo's tepid grades even come close to doing it justice.

Haha, it's funny read people complaining about the art style, because that's on of the only reasons I picked up this release in the first place! I think it's gorgeous!
The first two episodes were pretty dull with all that dialogue, but ep 3 really found it's stride. I can't wait to watch the rest!

Couldn't stand it. Just felt like a shonen fighting show with verbal diarrhea. 50 minutes always felt excessively long for what story it had to tell.

Really? I thought it was heavy-handed and beat the joke into ground about ten times over.
I guess that is as funny as Endless Eight, then.

Pretty merciful review for a terribly written show... >_> Art style is about the only thing it has going for it.

Pfft, don't worry. I haven't watched a single episode of the series, but I actually found the utterly strange art design appealing (I like unusual stuff) so I'm very curious to know what people thought of it.
