I dunno if anyone here is taking Japanese @ UCLA, but my sensei is leaving PSU (she doesn't like cold weather, apparently) and is heading to the bright, sunny (hopefully warmer) lands of UCLA..

If you're in that area, and are taking/planning on taking Japanese courses, try to get scheduled with Nogami-sensei. I assure you she's an incredible Japanese teacher. :D

I don't know what she'll be teaching, but she said she's moving this summer... so I suppose she'll be there in the fall.

If anyone's still reading this, and is in the UCLA area... Some of her favorite films are:
Mononoke Hime, Tanpopo, and anything Godzilla.

If you do skits in class (you should; that was part of our curriculum here anyway), she particularly enjoys crazy skits.

What do I mean by 'crazy'? Well, here's a few examples my class did over the last year or so:

1. A skit, done almost entirely in various Japanese dialects, including her own native Nagoya-ben.
2. Searching for a Part-Time job with Pirates
3. A skit about 'How great it is to go to Japan' where everything goes wrong... done in reverse (a la Seinfeld).
4. Selections from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, done in Japanese (with appropriate props, of course)
5. Otaku Anonymous (with a "Samurai Catgirl", "Captain Hentai", and a Yaoi Fangirl.)
6. Searching for a Full-Time job, and all the applicants are strange (Samurai, Big fat Otaku, Canadian, Deep-voiced Woman, etc..)

Oh yeah, and no offense to Chris (or anyone else from Canadia) but... Canadians are great in Japanese skits. :)

Basic Canadian/Japanese Accent Primer:
"Ore wa canada-jin eh?"
"Ore no shigoto wa mounty, eh?"
"Ore wa beer wo nomu no ga suki, eh?"
"sayonara, eh?"
(the 'r' sound needs to be pronounced very hard, like what you hear in English: "rag", "read", "ring", "rom" and "rub".. and 'ryu' is 're-you'. And every sentence needs to end on an up-tone, like you're asking a question.)

To paraphrase Krusty the Clown: "I kid. I kid 'because I love! I tell ya, the best folk in the world are Canadian folk!"

Well if you have her e-mail, tell her to sign up with the ANS ML where she can hear about anime being shown in L.A. as well as the occasional Godzilla and other kaiju news.

She's not into anime as a whole.. just artistic works like Mononoke and Nausicaa.. Heck, I'm not sure what all she likes, outside of Ghibli titles.

Besides, I'm not sure how skilled in English she is. We never spoke English in the classroom. ^^; I assume she's fairly skilled in the language, but how much so is somewhat of a mystery to me.

Question for our friends up north...I've always wondered do Canadians actually USE 'eh?' or is that just a stereotype?

Evil or Very Mad We don`t live in Canadia, we live in Canada! And everyone says eh, it`s universal (and that includes you!)! But seriously, we don`t say eh that much... well at least I don`t think we do... And mounties aren`t that common, the only time I saw one I was in grade six and it was at a rally for mounties (i was a part of the girl guides...)...

sorry for all the typing errors, I was typing with a French keyboard...

Most Canadians do not use 'eh'..

In fact, the only people whom I know who regularly use 'eh' are people on the border between Canada and the US.. and it seems to occur most prominently in people who live in the Great Lakes region.

And I'm aware that not all Canadians are Mounties, have moose for pets, drink beer, watch hockey, go ice fishing, and say 'eh'... :)

But I still find most of the above activities silly. :)

A fair portion of the other staffers are Canadian, so I'd be in trouble if what I said was meant to be taken seriously.

Oh yeah... And, as for "Canadia": it's actually a blend of "Canada" and "Arcadia". Isn't that spiffy? :D

[EDIT] Hm. I was gonna link to a great "Canada" beer commercial on AdCritic. It was about a Canadian who was ranting about all the things that Americans stereotypically attribute to Canadia ("aboot" instead of "about", and moose and hockey and stuff) ... but AdCritic's been acquired by some lameo company, and is currently offline. :p Trust me, though, it was a great commercial. ;)[/EDIT]

I believe the add you wre refering to was based on this text:

"Hey.
I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader
and I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled
and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I'm certain they're really, really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a President.
I speak English and French, NOT American.
and I pronounce it 'ABOUT', NOT 'A BOOT'.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.
I believe in peace keeping, NOT policing.
DIVERSITY, NOT assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.

A TOQUE IS A HAT,
A CHESTERFIELD IS A COUCH,
AND IT IS PRONOUNCED 'ZED' NOT 'ZEE', 'ZED'!!!

CANADA IS THE SECOND LARGEST LANDMASS!
THE FIRST NATION OF HOCKEY!
AND THE BEST PART OF NORTH AMERICA!

MY NAME IS JOE!!
AND I AM CANADIAN!!!!!!!!"

http://www.geocities.com/laodah/IAM.html

It was used by Molson.
