If you've been following the news on this recently, then some of you would've known about this and the ANN's article wouldn't surprise you.

Quote: | Netflix announced its fourth quarter 2024 earnings on Tuesday, stating it gained 18.9 million new subscribers in the quarter, it's biggest-ever quarterly increase. The company stated its ad-supported plans in the quarter accounted for more than 55% of new subscribers in countries that offer the ad-supported tier. |
In Short, there is no reason for this other than sheer greed.

Basically everything since at least 2021. There was a dip for Covid so everyone rose prices and kept raising them even after making record profits. The gaming industry is part of that too.

Unfortunately, you're going to have to add the anime industry too. Because anime industry have already bumped their price too. If Netflix is going to raise the subscription rate, then so will Crunchyroll and Hidive too.

I'm honestly shocked so many people are still using this garbage streaming service when they're getting robbed at proverbial gunpoint.

I've had multiple family members, coworkers and friends all totally forget they have netflix because they straight up don't watch anything on it and their card conveniently just keeps on getting charged... I pride myself in being the "hey don't forget to cancel your subscriptions!" friend. And a bit of a pirate... yo ho! (i support the anime industry!!!)
Everybody, bring this price hike up to family and friends and make sure they're either using their subscriptions, great! or if they're not, let them know to cancel! $3 more might not seem like much but that's $36 EXTRA a year on top of the subscription price already being paid.
*grandpa voice* I remember when Netflix was $4.99 a month...

Wait, didn't Netflix say they will stop reporting new subscribers count or that was something else that they said want to stop reporting that I forgot? Anyone know?

I only have it now because it’s included with my cell phone plan otherwise I would not pay for it on its own, I’m honestly surprised Netflix has so many subscribers I feel their catalog has become so mediocre.

If anything is on Netflix that I can't watch on Crunchyroll or HiDive (which I have yearly subscriptions for) then I go to the seas to watch it, lol

After all these price increases, I’ve slowly rolled back my sub level from to the lowest tier available. I think I’m finally gonna cave and do the Verizon perk with Netflix/MAX bundled for $10/month.

I quit Netflix just before they raised prices back in 2022 (might have been November 2021?), because I was sick of them raising prices even back then. Seeing as they continue to raise prices doesn't make me want to go back. Its not going to get better they will continue to push prices higher for non-ads to force people onto the ad tiers where they make more money from advertisers. I also expect them at some future date to "punish" people who sign up for a month to binge by forcing minimum subscription periods like say 3 months because greedy corpos know no bounds. I've been focusing on my backlog of Steam and GOG games, my anime blu-ray backlog and my substantial backlog of books. I figure even if I don't buy anything else I've got a decade worth of entertainment for my spare time.

I believe it was that they would not be regularly reporting sub counts.

This is Netflix effectively declaring victory in the streaming wars by telling customers they're gonna pay more and there's nothing they can do about it.
At least do what Max does and offer a yearly subscription package with a baked in discount.
