Sounds like Hosoda is still insistent on not getting a co-writer again, so it'll no doubt be a very pretty but ultimately middling movie.

Meh, depends on how the story's executed. Summer Wars, Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Wolf Children are his best works I've seen; stumbled with Boy and the Beast; and feel Mirai and Belle are down a notch compared to his earlier works.

That would explain why all 2D Chizu people have been free all this time.

Curious about what "global classic" is being referred to here. Given what little is said about the movie and Hosoda's storytelling inclinations, the only thing I can think of that even vaguely fits is a gender-swapped take on The Little Prince.

To be fair to both Hosoda and screenwriter Satoko Okudera, the film was more of a sequel than an adaptation of the original novel. Hosoda hasn’t had a separate screenwriter for his films starting with Boy and the Beast. Still, I enjoy Hosoda’s recent films and am looking forward to this one.
If it will be interesting to see if Sony releases the film under Crunchyroll (very likely), Sony Pictures Classics, or Columbia Pictures. While Sony occasionally sells the distribution rights of select films to another distributor for certain territories, I doubt they would sell North American rights to Toho owned GKIDS. But I won’t be surprised if GKIDS helps promote the film as they have the distribution rights to Hosoda’s previous films.

The original novel has totally different story from the movie. The story of the original novel occurs when Kazuko Yoshiyama, the aunt who works at the museum was a student.

Fascinating that nearly all "original" anime movies (meaning not film installments of TV series, even if most of them are adaptations of novels or other sources) - and especially those by Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda, Satoshi Kon and Ghibli - have female protagonists. For Hayao Miyazaki (and I guess hence Ghibli) the explanation is simple: he is a feminist. But why the others? Especially since Miyazaki has been more likely to have male protagonists (his Lupin film doesn't count really but that still leaves Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises, The Boy and the Heron) than his modern contemporaries. Some might quibble with Weathering With You and The Garden of Words, but Shinkai hasn't had true male protagonists since The Place Promised In Our Early days in 2004, and if it were up to him Suzume wouldn't have even had a male co-star. As for Hosoda, while Mirai no Mirai technically had a (bratty insufferable) male protagonist you wouldn't know it from the title or marketing materials, so that leaves Summer Wars and The Boy and The Beast. (Also, it is notable that Hosoda doesn't depict his female characters as badly as his male ones, i.e. Wolf Children's depiction of both the father and son abandoning the family, the aforementioned brat in Mirai and also his father, also the boy and father in The Boy and The Beast, plus the actions of the guys in Summer Wars).
Not going on a political "anime movies need more male protagonists!" thing, especially given the decline of shojo and josei anime series the past decade or so. (Plus even with the female protagonists, Your Name, Belle, Princess Mononoke etc. were still shonen if you are going to classify them using their art styles, themes and content.) It is just that this "major anime 'original' films need female protagonists and preferably aged 12-25 at that (though Kon made the bold decision to make the Paprika protag 26)" seems to be the only reason to do a gender-swapped The Little Prince. These films generally don't have fanservice - quite the opposite actually and this is even more notable as they are technically shonen - so that's not the reason.

You literally listed out all the movies with a co-writer (or that he had no screenwriter credit for in the case of Summer Wars) as his best works and all the ones he wrote himself as his worst.
