I found Naoe playing the straight man to be funny and none of the magical beings to be excessively annoying, so it got 2 stars from me.

Just read the manga. Without Synecdoche's artwork what's even the point?

Yet another article on this site interpreting it as a "comedy". It's so interesting to me. I guess maybe that's what they had to market it as to get people watching the anime, lol...
Quote: | The aunt helps Elfuda lose weight, only to gain weight herself, and then right after Elfuda finally reaches her goal, she gains all the weight back. Why is there an unnecessary arc that doesn't add much to the story? But then again, there wasn't much of a story. |
It's kink. It's fetish. The characters ostensibly "want to lose weight", but like, they don't. That's never been in the cards. It's a manga for the weight gain community on pixiv/deviantart/etc. That it somehow is now available to buy at any barnes and noble, and got an anime, is extremely baffling to me, but ultimately that's what it is.

Comedy is the genre its publisher has it tagged as. If that's wrong the fault lies with them. Regardless, the manga is definitely trying to be funny, it's just not very good at it and this is also true for the authors hentai.

I followed the author on tumblr for years before they started publishing any manga and they would just post drawings of fat girls or drawings of themself as a fat girl. That's always been the main point.

I mean, I'm not attacking the reviewer or anything, I'm not saying it's anyone's "fault", but I don't think it's completely implausible for someone to realize what's going on here. That it's marketed as a comedy is also part of "what's going on here".

But the OVA isn't even out yet??
EDIT: Huh, looks like it was released last month. Good to know.

Calling the series a "comedy" isn't completely inaccurate, but it is more truthfully just a pure fan service show focused on a particular fetish.

I think it's okay to want plot with your fetish material though. Just to say that the reviewer probably got it was solely there for fetish and was more questioning why there were no other enjoyable aspects, because even if it is your fetish you could still want a deeper plot and more character chemistry. For me personally, if I'm wincing at how bad everything else is there's no way I could enjoy something raunchy.
