Murai in Love (TV)

Source: Manga (completed @ 7 volumes, by Junta Shima)

Demographic: Shoujo

Animation Studio: J.C. Staff

Genres: comedy, romance

Themes: otaku, school

Plot Summary: Murai is an unassuming high school boy who confesses his love for the teacher Tanaka, a woman who is a fan of otome games for girls. When Tanaka curtly refuses Murai's advances, Murai returns the next day a changed man: new hair, new style, all emulating Tanaka's favorite character from an otome game. Now Murai sets out on his quest to be Tanaka's dream man.

Air Date & Platform:
September 4, 2024 (Wednesday)
Available on: Hulu

Episode Count / Runtime: Pending
----------------------------------

I've seen it listed as an ONA and TV series, so I'm not really sure which is the official label. But it's streaming on Disney+ outside the U.S. and on Hulu in the U.S., but set to also broadcast on TV in Japan in October. ANN's Encyc. has it listed as a TV series, so I just went with that.

J.C. Staff has put forth some pretty good rom-coms lately, so I might eventually check this out.

I was a bit hesitant on this one due to the teacher-student thing, but after 3 episodes now, I'm sold. It's so off-the-wall, I can't take that plot aspect seriously enough to be mad at it. And so far the teacher is doing her damnedest to be the adult in the room, though the struggle is real. And Murai's got a couple of great wingmen.

I really don't know how to describe this, except to say it's pretty surreal, in the art style(s), which is all over the map, the plot shenanigans, the characters, and the satirical humor. It's definitely keeping me on my toes.

I think it's a motion manga as what I'd rate so far: Story B, Performances A+, Production: B+, Animation: Nonexistent.

It's an easy show to like but a tough show to watch.

Some of the middle episodes have dragged a little with the humor not quite hitting home, but the last couple of episodes have been great. I've especially had fun with all the character dramas in Tanaka-sensei's body as they try to do their jobs in response to her various freak-outs and meltdowns, kind of like a non-sciencey "Organs at Work."

I'm kinda hoping Murai can find love with his wingman, who's really gone above and beyond the call for him. I'm pretty sure he's going to have to get over Tanaka, rather than just wait to graduate so it won't get her arrested and fired. But this show could still surprise me, as it so often surprises her.

If this show was animated, it'd easily be my favorite of the year.

I thought Kiriyama, the wingman, was interested in Hirai's older sister which was why he was so in favor of Murai getting in with Ayano, the older woman who's out of reach.

What fascinates me the most about this series are the twins and how they fit into everything. One is an introvert, the other an extrovert yet both are rooting for Murai... It suggests some things but I don't know if there's enough story left to spell anything out.

And between Ayano's 8 year older boss or 7 year younger student, I think ultimately being with Murai will be less of an issue for her. Here's the thing no one can admit: Ayano fell for the ten year old. Yes, her otaku 2d crush has the same eyes as the ten year old boy had but that's not a coincidence, that's the point.

I guess that ended pretty well without crossing any lines. I liked the movie theater venue for sending off Hitotose and tying up loose ends. Head teacher was a pretty decent fellow for as sleazy as he seemed. I say sleazy because he had the same laid back demeanor as that teacher in Dead Dead Demon, so I wasn't expecting him to be much better.

So yeah, I had a good time with this, and I'd recommend it, but not wildly enthusiastically. Smile
