I like different flavors in my fall seasonings, and I'm hoping this show will spice up my anime hotpot going into 2025. It looks distinct and creepy and intense.

I am not really into horror anime but it may be a watch, it looks pretty out there.

After all these years, it's finally coming to tv! And it looks like it might be the first anime to do justice to Junji Ito's work. I'm really looking forward to this!

It's all trailers and blurbs and creator rep at this point, but I think there's a good chance that this one, Dandadan, Negative Positive Angler, and Mushroom Pup were made without the usual factory molds.
Not that I have anything against good anime that don't try to reinvent the wheel. |

Not being all that into horror and having seen maybe one or two horror anime I was not sure what to expect and after episode 1... I am still not all that more certain of what to expect. The first episode did not scare me but it did make me curious to see how the town is probably going to spiral hell. I usually like a mystery to be solved but I have a feeling that this is not the sort of show to provide an answer.

Episode 1
Man, that Junji Ito guy is something else, let me tell ya. What a unique mind to be able to think up this stuff. I own a copy of the Uzumaki graphic novel. Haven't read it yet but I'm willing to bet that this adaption is being pretty faithful. |

That escalated quickly! It's fun spotting all the spirals around town. I'm not sure why, but the scene between the father and the potter was the most intense to me. I think the other "intense" scenes were too hysterical (not in the funny sense) to affect me, but this was low-key enough that you could relate to the potter's discomfort about how odd his praise was, and hoping the guy would leave soon, and not quite being sure what to do to get him to go away without insulting him.

I have mixed feelings after the second episode. The horrible things that are happening are creative and it is impossible to predict what spiral related incident will take place next. It is fascinating to see the town turn into a hellscape and try to understand what is causing it.
On the other hand, it is never scary but just so absurd that it is closer to comedy than anything else at times. Unless there is some spiral power keeping people in town I also very much wonder why people are not noping the hell out of town. Just seeing one or two of the many incidents should clue you in that something is very wrong and yet the people are quite calm. |

We waited half a decade for this adaptation...and this is what we get. I can't even laugh at this - that's how bad the drop is.
Worse, Toonami had tied its fate to that of this adaptation's release. This could seriously end up causing the block's second cancellation. |

I try not to complain too much about animation (I watch many mediocre shows so my standard are not that polished so to speak) but the drop is indeed noticeable. There is also the pacing matter, I have not read the source material but I get the distinct feeling that the anime is still rather fast paced.

Episode 2
Aw, it's a love story! A really, really, really twisted love story, if you'll pardon the pun. I'm enjoying the weirdness. There is literally no way to predict what's going to happen next. Gotta say, the inhabitants of Kurouzu are pretty chill about the batpoop crazy stuff going on in their town. but I'd hate to be a member of the local tourism board. Talk about a tough sell. |

Man, I want to like the show but it is not making it easy at times. The pacing in the third episode was fast to an absurd degree and it detracted from a lot of otherwise disturbing and unexpected moments. It is hard to get invested or be shocked when the show speedruns through every situation. I also question the people besides Shuuichi more and more. They act like nothing is happening or just move on without any thought and after all the shit that has happened Shuuichi was even called paranoid.

And so Uzumaki ends. I liked the show for how creative it can be (especially art wise) and for just how unsettling it sometimes is. That said, the pacing was so fast that you barely had time to take anything in, it is hard to care for what happens when the show is running from one event to the next at breakneck speeds. Because of that many of the supposedly scary events feel comical instead. The animation quality was also wildly inconsistent.
I suppose I did like the ending and the lore dumps in the final episode but even then I can only call the show okay at best. |

So given the events of the last episode, does that perception mean we're inside the spiral, or outside of it? I really had high hopes for this. Pity it couldn't live up to its promise. |
