To clarify, GOG is offering the original PC ports of the classic RE trilogy, & it's already been confirmed that RE2 & 3 will NOT be based on the Japan-only Sourcenext releases. This is understandable, as those DVD releases didn't seem to have any English text on them and GOG's priority is mainly just on getting older PC games to work on modern hardware, not doing anything more akin to modding & the like, which is what would need to be done to get English text on the Sourcenext releases.
However, the RE1 PC port that's currently available is the best the first game ever got, so it's fully compatible with all of the modern mods fans have made (just make sure to install the JP version in place of the default US version). At the very least, I'm happy that GOG managed to convince Capcom to agree to this, as this marks the first time Capcom has offered the classic trilogy in any "new" form since 2006, which is when RE(1): Deadly Silence came out for the DS & the Sourcenext PC re-releases for RE2 & 3 came out in Japan.
Hopefully these releases will do well enough to prompt another company to approach Capcom about doing a larger scale remaster or collection for consoles. I'm sure a studio like Nightdive or Digital Eclipse would love to do something with these games.

Why use an image for the RE1 Remake, though?

That's a shame. I already have all the Sourcenext with the HD project mods so I find little reason to get these.
I guess it's nice for people who aren't into modding or know how to do it but it would have been nice to at least get the Sourcenext versions officially. Are the GOG releases uncensored at least or is it like other modern 'remasters'?

RE1 does have the full, uncut, & color live-action intro, so it is 100% uncensored, at least. The video itself is the low quality avi files from back in the day, but you can easily mod in the fan-upscaled mp4 files.

Does this mean Code Veronica is the only mainline game not available officially on PC?
I think the Outbreak games would benefit the most from an official release because of the online components. I know and have played in the fan community for them but it'd be nice if there was just an official Steam release for those games one day.

So far, yes, as it never had a native PC port ever since it release originally on Dreamcast. Hopefully one could be done these days and have it be based on the HD version, and possibly the options to pick between the original and X versions included for preservation. (The only differences are just the additional/changed Wesker scenes.)
That, and also have the difficulty options built into its English build (the JP versions of Code Veronica has difficulty options of Normal, Easy and Very Easy, while the English US and EU/PAL versions only/always forced you to Normal with no difficulty selection before you start.)

From what I remember the X version was buggier and had some issues and they changed Steve's appearance a bit due to legal reasons.

If the PS2 version fixed the boss battle with Steve to be less bullshit it automatically is better than the Dreamcast version……if it didn’t it’s a wash.
