Does anyone know whether the series ending will either be conclusive or abrupt? I've never read it.

Since everyone is saying this is not gonna get a second season, I guess it's time to start the manga. Even though I waited years because I loved the anime and didn't want to get spoiled

It's definitely going to be conclusive. The series has been very clearly heading towards an ending for the last while, only stalled by the author taking several hiatuses to prepare for it.
This is one of those manga where I'm not sure I entirely enjoyed where it went, on a personal level, but I sure respect the heck out of it for going the places it did. It's an uncomfortable read that is uncomfortable for most of the right reasons.

It's also important to mention that the manga is going to end on 108 chapters, which has significant meaning in Buddhism relating to the amount of earthly desires a person must overcome on their way to nirvana. Let's just say given how the story morphs into a slightly twisted take on the concept of the bodhisattva, closing out on that number is a perfect. People have been speculating for a long time whether Haruko Ichikawa would attempt to end the manga that way, and it's fantastic to see the lunatic actually pull it off.
I genuinely love the series, even as it became much more emotionally fraught and complex, where the reader is forced to reconcile with how even the most noble goals can become twisted by trauma, selfishness and a lack of consideration. I do appreciate that Ichikawa refuses to pass judgement on any of the cast. It does give the story a slightly frustrating lack of closure, but it's a deliberate move that's very much true to life.
I'm still gutted that the series has (so far) been passed over for anime continuation. It's strange. The franchise has somehow remained incredibly popular, even as a cult hit that has largely been ignored or forgotten by the seasonal churn, so I always figured we'd eventually see more. Well, same situation with the manga I guess. I had really hoped an outlet like ANN would review the volumes, but apparently they don't have any agreement with Kodansha, so eh. Although honestly, you'd probably need a Nick Creamer type to properly engage with the work in a thoughtful enough way, so I also see why dealing with it might be considered too much effort.
Well, just like Phos' journey, what could have been...

If anyone else is on the fence, let me also chime in that this manga is absolutely worth giving a try.
I watched the anime some years ago and found myself mildly curious about the story and world but only picked up the manga just in time for the 12th volume to drop. I wasn't expecting it to quite possibly become my favorite manga.
This is a rare type of manga to get translated. The overt story isn't as important as what the symbolic nature of the story is telling. And the visual doublespeak is such a breath of fresh air that it truly disarmed me. If you enjoy the shadow girls in Utena's anime adaptation, or visual storytelling that tells more through panel layouts and negative space than exposition dumps, you might want to give it a look.
Fair warning that it's a bit of a bumpy ride, though. I think the manga was a bit off putting and confusing to me at first, but it suddenly clicked how the story was actually being told a few volumes in and then I fell in love.

We’re never getting s2 by Orange, are we ;__;
The manga does look cool though; suppose I’ll pick it up once there’s less on my plate.

A single chapter could end the story where things are now and we have been in the final arc for at least 2+ years due to the breaks. No surprises here.
The chapter has to be done at this point so she only has a cover and tankobon extra to deliver before Dragon´s Dogma II or another RPG can claim her soul.

Haruko Ichikawa is a master of using positive and negative space. Their visually unique art style is unlike anything else I have read.
Most manga artists fall into similar schools, so something so beautiful yet totally distinct is a rare find.
That alone qualifies them as important enough to be included in the manga pantheon of Great Work.
But story itself is an amazing look at existence and Buddhist thought.
Studio Orange really should make another season; it was the show that put them on the map.
