Quote: | I'll be honest; if I weren't reviewing this manga, I wouldn't have gotten this far to get to those more heartfelt moments because there isn't a lot here to chew on before we get to that point. |
Gosh, it sounds like something that should have happened at the end of the first volume or early in the second. If it had, I might have kept up with the series.
An alternative story line I was wondering about before I gave up on the series: Mei is not forgetting her glasses, she's hiding them to create an excuse to get close to Potato-kun.
Now, if she were far-sighted, she might get out the door and to school before realizing she'd forgotten the glasses she needs to read, but then there'd be no excuse to get in Potato-kun's face to figure out it's him.

Still miles better than the anime, simply for not having their awful aesthetic choices.

Wow, that's a really high score for a fairly negative review.

In my opinion the manga gets better later on when Mei starts to see Komura in a romantic way, or in other words, there will be some significant progression in the relationship between the two leads, and some of the romantic tension is spread out well in several moments of the later volumes. Of course it isn't something spectacularly good, but it's still better than a lot of weaker romcoms out there. I think it helps that the author is simultaneously drawing another romcom since 2021 (I love the older girl next door) with believeable and well-written leads.

I think the review is fair, personally i think the biggest problem is that the manga just doesn't really suit Volumes very well, the anime has similar "issues".
It's structure is fairly simple, a bunch of short chapters to make you crack smile with the occasional long chapter for actual character development. If you are experiencing it over a long time then that works fine but all at once it probably just seems weird, as some of the short chapters can seem.... arbitrary.

So as a glasses wearer, I can say that yes it's almost impossible to "forget" your glasses. It's very easy (especially as a school age kid) to have a schedule and not find your glasses in time to meet the schedule.
Second theory is that "I forgot my glasses and couldn't read the blackboard" is the Japanese equivalent of "the dog ate my homework" as an excuse for not having any content in your class notes when they are inspected by the teacher. In other words, the premise is a joke itself.
