I'm up to volume 5.
Nice to know it won't be a never ending LN series. It's quite good.[/code]

Are these novels especially long, or is the anime a bit slower paced than average?

They're a little above average length and density, and the anime did add a few things to make that pacing work.
But the truth is 90% of light novel adaptions are just going way too fast. We should be seeing a lot more shows do only one or two volumes. No one has ever gone wrong that way.

There's definitely anime that suffers from slow pacing. Grimgar and Devil Is a Part Timer are a couple LN adaptations that could've been better if they'd adapted more novels per cour.

First season of Hataraku Maou-sama was indeed a bit to slow-paced but in case of Grimgar the pacing was just fine concidering the story tone.

Grimgar's one of the few adaptations that demonstrably improve the source material.
One of the few anime that really knows how to let a mood hang. They should be backing trucks up at the director's door after that and Moryo no Hako, which never even got licensed, but there's no justice in this world.

I hope with the light novels ending the anime will get a complete adaptation. I really enjoyed the first season and I'm looking forward to more.

Haven't read the LN yet, but I believe Eighty Six had a good adaption with a good pace.
