it was only in theaters from last friday to this friday where i live in chicago. i finally found time to watch it last night, it was great, better than weathering with you. but i dont know why it was in theaters for only a week, and more importantly i dont know why the theaters were so empty for this movie. maybe the hype died down a bit for these movies

Water: Mario and Sony's own Pope's Exorcist contributed to Suzume's lower totals.

Where I live it's still in theaters after 2 weeks.
They pulled all the dubbed showings within a few days only subtitles are still playing.
There were only 12 people when I went to the first showing on Monday in the morning but all the later showings at night were almost sold out, so I had to go during the day.
Still love Your Name the best of the 3 and Suzume was a really good movie, I hated Weathering with You couldn't pay me to watch that one again.

Maybe it has something to do with the culture relevancy?
I'm in Indonesia and Suzume still on cinema TODAY since 8th March. Eight weeks and still going. No dub, only English/Indonesian subtitle.

It's a bunch of different things, I think. Even though it's grown a lot in popularity, anime is still considered a niche interest in America. There are a lot of heavily-advertised big-name movies produced here, taking up most of people's attention. The Mario Movie, specifically, is absorbing 99% of people looking for an animated movie to take their kids to--Suzume isn't quite a "family movie" in the vein of Pixar/Dreamworks/etc. (too much PTSD, not enough slapstick), so most around here don't know what to make of it. Going to theaters in general has become less popular here, especially for younger people used to streaming everything, like most anime fans.
I re-watched it towards the end of its run, and the theater was mostly full; but they had downgraded it to one of their smallest rooms, and this is in California, which has a high concentration of nerds and Asian-Americans.

It depends where you are. I live in New Jersey and there's still four theaters that are running it.
