Pay raises are good, but based on one source I was looking at to figure out a potential living wage, ¥260k may only be enough to tread water.

It's a start. Better to tread water than be underwater.

I hate spam, but I gotta admit that given the topic of this thread, this spam did crack me up. $1900 a months for new hires... gosh, lucky that Tokyo is such a cheap city to live in. Rolling Eyes

For the entertainment industry, that’s pretty good. My starting wage at a Japanese company was 230,000. That was just enough to tread water. That 30,000 makes a huge difference.

That’s less than $12/hour (based on 8-hours-five-days work week) Laughing

Percentage-wise, that increase suggests that pay was woefully behind.

To be fair, you don't have to live in Tokyo to work in Tokyo. There are plenty of people who live on the outskirts or neighboring cities and take the train in to work every day.

But even then, 260k yen/month is not a good salary.

It should be the equivalent of at least $3500-$4000/month. However, that is not the reality here.

I'm not making an assessment either way since I have no frame of reference and I'm mostly just seeing what people say to collect data, but we have people saying different things in this thread.

So, which is it?

what is wage for japanese animator in entertainment industry ?

The wages for Japanese animators in the entertainment industry can vary widely depending on factors such as their level of experience, the type of work they do, and the company they work for.

According to a 2021 survey by the Japan Animation Creators Association, the average monthly salary for animators in Japan was ¥206,600 (approximately $1,870 USD). However, this figure can be influenced by the fact that many animators are employed on a project-by-project basis rather than having a steady salary, which can result in fluctuations in income.

It's worth noting that working conditions for animators in Japan have been a topic of concern in recent years, with some reports of long hours and low pay. Some companies have responded by implementing better working conditions and higher wages, but there is still work to be done to improve the industry as a whole.
