The pandemic has shown that we've outgrown the need for E3. E3 is obsolete.

This started way before the pandemic. The Big 3 have been off and on with E3 for well over a decade now. I think the last two consoles were announced outside of E3 entirely, and didn't have workable versions at that year's event. E3 has been on the decline since at least 2008, and as noted, even before the pandemic hit Sony and Microsoft skipped that 2019 E3 as well.

I still personally think it's the wrong direction to go for the industry, but I know I'm in the minority on that, and certainly in no position to change anything.

E3 has definitely become something where the value of it depends heavily on your situation going into it. The big companies don't need it and can get plenty of attention doing their own thing. Microsoft even tries to have it both ways by not attending, but doing something nearby at the same time. Journalists and game channels will oftentimes say that it is their big chance to meet with the industry, so they still want it. The small companies seem to want it because it's their chance to get noticed by publishers that otherwise might not even give them a meeting.

I don't think it necessarely means they are just going to not have a presence at all. This news as I was saying before ANN reported on it is a bit missleading. NIntendo has always been known for just hosting there own digital streams anyways so them turning down the offer to be part of the live performance floor is expected. How ever I think sony, Nintendo and Xbox will find a way to host there own individual showings at E3, they just wont be a part of conferences through the ESA. I have said this before but the world is changing for the video game industry and I am sure they find it less profitable these days to spent lots of money on live show performances like they did back in the day. That part of E3 I believe is dead but we will continue to get game announcements by way of digital distrubution.
