Great review!
Episode 1 blew me away with the visuals, and the next two are keeping it up.
This one is near the top of my list this season, I hope it can keep up the suspense and visuals. Downright fantastic fantasy show, and not an isekei!

yes, this is the closest thing to the Apothecary Diaries and Culinary Chronicles of the Court Flower (another LN series I've been enjoying) that we'll be getting (for now)
I do enjoy the mysteries and also a fan of Shouxue's pretty powers. However, I feel I would enjoy the anime more once I've read the novels. Had no idea Seven Seas licensed the novels for this series.
I feel like some of the cases get resolved quickly including the two-parter episode. However, I've been told from source readers that the pace is similar in the novels too.
Nevertheless, I am interested in finding out more about Bingyue and what he’s expecting from Shouxue

One of the unexpected gems of the season so far. The dialog-heavy intrigue can be a little tough to follow at times (especially since we have the typical issue of a direct romanization of the Chinese name in the subtitle vs a Japanese pronunciation). Jusetsu/Shouxue is great fun, and I do like the fact that despite her magic the best she can offer in the two requests we've dealt with so far is closure, but this is not undervalued.

Miri Mikawa (Culinary Chronicles' author)'s series Sugar Apple Fairy Tale is getting an anime adaptation, so I'm at least a little hopeful we'll get Culinary Chronicles as well one day. I've been enjoying it a lot, too.

Yeah, when they do that, I just give up on knowing anyone's name or what to call them. I have trouble enough remembering one name per character, let alone two.
I'm liking how the side characters are being slowly developed as well as the mains, and don't feel like they're just plot tools. I wonder if Wen Ying (looked it up) didn't see anything, or if he's just keeping tactfully mum as a court attendant wisely does?
And Gaojun, dude, falling asleep in the middle of making your move? Real smooth there.

Funnily enough, compared to almost all other Chinese court intrigue dramas, this is incredibly light We only got like, eight or something characters introduced in three episodes! Most other c-dramas would have at least, the equivalent to three football teams introduced already!
I do agree that they should just pick one name and run with it.

"Raven of the Inner Palace" at EP3, is one of the most beautiful and precious things I have ever seen on the screen. That the soul of a dead and lost lover could sound the musical note of the bell, had more feels and tears than it had any right to possess!
The characters 寿雪 pronounced Jusetsu in Japanese and Shòu Xuě in Chinese is interesting. If this is Chinese Court Drama, should not the Raven's name be sounded as Shouxue which has a much more musical sound? Also the characters 寿雪 are themselves Chinese in origin.

It sorta makes sense that the Japanese voice cast pronounce the names the way their primary audience would naturally read the characters (the bulk of kanji are Chinese in origin of course). It independently makes sense that as they are actually Chinese names, the subs use that. The two just end up making it hard to learn everyone's names. (Not something I'm good at to start with)

After watching Heaven Official's Blessing and Mo Dao Zu Shi, both Chinese anime based off Chinese light novels, I'll have to give this one a shot. I was considering it this year anyway and the review solidified my decision.

Add me to the pile of waiting for a proper Apothecary Diaries adaptation. Baffling that such a well-known and well-received series has gotten its second manga adaptation already (for some reason I can't begin to fathom) but no anime announcements yet.
Raven feels a tad more romance-themed and definitely faster-paced in its mystery solving subplots, but I wouldn't hold that against it. It's still in my top-5 new shows of the season, all things considered.

Kanji in general are Chinese in origin, however, traditionally Chinese names are pronounced by their Japanese on'yomi reading (so for example in 寿雪 the character "寿" has "kotobuki" as its "kun'yomi", Japanese reading, and "su/ju/shuu" as on'yomi reading). On'yomi is based on the Japanese approximation of the characters' original Chinese pronunciation* and to make it a bit more complicated, pronunciation from various ages and various levels of being misheard/mistranscribed/etc. This way it's easier for Japanese speakers who don't speak Chinese to recognize and pronounce the name.
Nowadays I think there's kind of a push to use a closer approximation to the actual Chinese pronunciation, but regardless in names of historical people the on'yomi reading is the default. Eg. Zhuge Liang is "Shokatsu Ryou", his courtly name Kongming is "Koumei". Kind of like how the English pronunciation of Julius Caesar is nowhere near similar to how it would have been pronounced in actual Latin, but nobody really cares because that's how it's been set by tradition. (Never mind "Mark Antony" for Marcus Antonius.)
*Japanese and Chinese are very different languages, most Japanese who haven't learned to speak Chinese can't pronounce something the exact same way Chinese do, they simply don't share all the same sounds. Kind of similarly how many speakers of non-Scandinavian languages can't pronounce the English thorn and eth (like in "think" and "though") even after having specifically learned it, and use "s" or "d" as an approximation (so "think" and "sink" become homophones).
Aaaaanyway, as for the show. Ancient Chinese themed fantasies are not really my cup of tea, but I gave this a chance out of curiosity, and... well, I had to reconcile with the fact that ancient Chinese themed fantasies are still not my cup of tea. It's not a bad show, I guess it's competent, looks decent, but it's just not for me, especially with the heavy romance element, I'm just not into these kinds of romances. Also, after episode 3, I'm wondering if the anime is skipping stories? The flower-whistle princess said that the emperor has changed for the better since he met the raven princess, but like... we've seen no sign of that at all? It's like there were a bunch of chapters where we see him actually interacting with people, that were skipped so we could get to this story.

For common nouns that is correct, but names are Proper Nouns. It is very common world-wide to pronounce someone's name as it sounds in the named person's language. Tom Cruise is a very popular actor in Japan. His name in Katakana isトム・クルーズ pronounced Tomu Kurūzu in Japanese. Each language has different soundings so different results but the intention is the same. Try to make the same sounds as in the original language.
The Raven is supposed to be fully Chinese. If you accept that then her name is Shòu Xuě
