This sounds suspiciously like corpo speak for "We're going for blockchain games centered around NFTs" to me.

The previous head was pushing for that. This more sounds like people are going to be let go with restructuring.

Hoping it's actually "we're sick and tired of the old president's obsession with NFTs."

No friggin way. Forspoken poor reception and sales finally did the impossible, isn't it?
Really, Matsuda and his "leadership" with complete mismanagement of resources, poor game marketing, dozens of big and small failures from small games to AAA titles and shifting to really dubious ventures literally led Square to the bottom for YEARS while the positive profits from the black holes carried by a couple of good sellers and (mostly) FF14, and everyone knew and talked about that. Now there's only question if the new CEO will be at least competent at the job, and somehow clear the mess.
And for Matsuda - good riddance, dang it.

I'm interested in seeing what Matsuda finally being gone means for things.
Whatever NME is, they're reporting that "Square Enix has proposed that company president Yosuke Matsuda should be replaced with a candidate who has experience in blockchain."
- Uhoh.
I'm not hopeful at a glance that the new guy isn't just an upward-failing Yes-man that the shareholders figure will be young enough to keep up with NFT tech. So long as the current SE hits and new innovative gaming ideas are allowed to prosper, I'm interested in trying something new.
I just have this nagging feeling that he's being placed there as a puppet to kill their older online services/servers, and increase sub prices on existing stuff for more perceived "earnings" in the short-term.

I doubt Forspoken's failure had anything to do with this.
The only thing I know about Takashi Kiryu is he was a chairman in Square Enix China and his LinkedIn talks about experience in Blockchain industries. He also likes PS1 games so hopefully we see some classic-style game love under his leadership!

what? how many promotions is that so few months?
Kiryu became the general manager of Square Enix's corporate planning division in June 2020. He then became the chief strategy officer and executive officer for the company's corporate strategy and corporate communications department in April 2021.
---10 months
He became the chairman of the board of Square Enix in China in January 2022
---11months
and then the director of SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. in May 2022.
---4 monhths
He later became the director of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. in June 2022.
---1 month(?) - not necessarily a promotion, but depending on the structure of the group, HoldCos are normally higher ranked than normal Cos.
