an interesting start to a series that could be a lot of fun.

Which got cancelled after 18 chapters, I should add.

Way to ruin it for people that didn't read...

Shame this got canned so early.

I wish the Japanese readers gave this one a chance.

You know, I think my thoughts on the series were ruined by the fact that it was canned early. I really did enjoy the beginning parts, and I didn't start disliking it until the training arc began. Too bad it won't get a second chance, it could have been really fun.

It's very useful information for people who don't want to get invested into story that got dropped very quickly by the magazine it run in, and end up with very rushed ending.

Can't say that seeing this series on the front page didn't fill my heart with a bit of hope for a moment. Nice to see it's at least being properly released.

To be fair, the training arc did drag on and suddenly introduced a lot of characters readers had no reason to care for. Training or tournament arcs are always risky and should be only used with caution and attention to which characters get the spotlight.

Oh yeah, what I meant was that the training arc is when I started to dislike the series because of how long it dragged on for. The series also probably made the mistake of not leaving the village after chapter 1 and having the second werewolf. Ginka and Gluna had them leave the starting location after chapter 1 which had things develop faster, but also not introducing too many people (at least from the 5 chapters I've read so far)

Sure, it was a short lived series, but I rather enjoyed it.

I picked up a copy for my collection.

They did, it just that it wasted it change on a bunch of irrelevant characters and boring exam arc.

Could have been great if it wasn't cancelled so early...

Absolutely hated the twist, though. The author should've saved that one for some other series instead of shoehorning it in at the end.

I imagine it can be awkward trying to write these reviews for first volumes as though the next year or more of the series' fate hasn't already been determined. There were a couple bits in Nicholas Dupree's review of 100 Girlfriends volume 1 that were like that, too, if less blatantly:

Quote:
So while Rentaro may “only” be up to three official girlfriends by the end of this first volume, I wholeheartedly believe this series intends to hit its titular goal some day, without caveat.

[…]

That's an important factor with a constantly expanding cast that promises to climb into the triple digits by the time it ends, and gives hope for 100 Girlfriends to have some longevity beyond this first volume.

Someone in that comment thread described it as "speculating rather than doing research", but the reviewer's Twitter posts made it clear that he'd seen enough of the manga's Wikipedia page to know just how many girlfriends in it was.

(Though I can also imagine Rebecca deciding not to look up whether Red Hood was ongoing, either to not let the answer affect the review or because she didn't have time. With how much she writes for this place on top of a day job, I could certainly believe the latter.)

Nick actively reads 100 Girlfriends and is up-to-date on the current chapters. He was at the time of the original review, too. It was purely a case of writing for someone who had only read that volume and evaluating it based on that. Not surprised someone did the most uncharitable reading and assumed he hadn't "done his research." His knowledge of the manga isn't based on skimming Wikipedia, either.

Each writer here has their own approach, but for my part I try to keep the focus and scope of reviews exclusively to the material contained in whatever I'm covering. So a review of a Volume 1 will stick to whatever chapters, extras, etc are in that volume. I do the same for whenever I cover the Soul Eater perfect edition releases, even though that series has been completed for years. I am current on My Hero Academia's manga and have read all of Bleach, but I make a point to cover their anime episode reviews without bringing up or trying to anticipate future events.

There are several reasons for that, but first and foremost it's because I don't want to spoil somebody who's watching or reading these works for the first time. I want to keep them accessible for somebody who might pick up the first volume at a bookstore, or the many people who will watch an anime adaptation but not read the source manga. I think most people would be pretty frustrated if they clicked on a "Volume 1" review that spoiled or referenced later material, right?

I don't want to speak for Rebecca, and I don't know how much she knows about Red Hood's publication or length, but it's entirely valid to write a review from the perspective of somebody who just picked up this first volume, rather than somebody who read the simulpub release. I understand why some folks are more interested in discussing the series as a whole (or more likely re-litigating its eventual cancellation), but that's why there's a separate Manga section of the forums where they're free to start or join a discussion thread for the series.
