The Nintendo Direct was great for everyone except those people who get really mad when a Japanese company makes Japanese games for some reason Razz Not a huge fan of farm sims myself since they all just kind of blend together at this point but everything else was great.

Capcom's Battle Network collection looks like it has effort put into it by not being emulation but the actual game. With actual online! That's nice to see. Zero interest in not-Dino-Crisis game though.

Konami giving Suikoden I and II some love is nice, but I hope they don't mess it up though.

Kind of interesting that the same showcase had two 1800s samurai games in it.

God of War's trailer was really good. Some of the combat looked like they are leaning more into the older game play with more combos. I doubt we'll see Kratos double jumping again, but they pleasantly surprised me with the last game by not ignoring things from the prior games.

The Among Us collab was a surprise. I'm sure it will be just Hololive, at least to start. And yeah, I see people say it's "dead" but it still gets ongoing support and is pretty different from what it was a couple years ago. Then again, people say that Fall Guys is dead, but games are full with matchmaking being immediate. I think that since neither is streamed as much as they were, it's easy for people to mistake that for a lack of popularity.

Man as much as it's been disappointing to see large numbers of people making fun of farm games (really channeling this screenshot of Popuri I happened to find yesterday) man I could not be MORE excited! I've never played ANB because I was afraid of the evil archaic gameplay quirks but a remake? Absolutely perfect! Hopefully they take some cues from it and FOMT when developing the new mainline game because Olive Town was kinda disappointing.

Also from what I understand while RF5 was received pretty middlingly, it still sold well regardless so that's most likely why we're getting new games. And thank god for that, when I saw the negative reviews I thought the series would be over again.

Ryza 1 and 2 are on sale for half off on the eshop right now so I picked up the first one yesterday. I didn't have enough time to even unlock alchemy yet but it already feels so nice and cozy.

To think Konami is being forced to make real games due to a smoking ordinance and failing for the most part, it's karma for abandoning gamers for addicts. Also today's Tales of stage was the worst thing I've seen in 8 years, announce a new Tales of game or something else that needs a remake other than Symphonia.

I take it Jean-Karlo wasn't a fan of the 2014 game by Double Helix? I mean, it's definitely been a "very long time" without a Strider game, in general, so to see him clarify "good" can only mean that, which is fair. It definitely wasn't in the same exact vein as the old arcade duology, but I though the 2014 game was excellent, in its own right, & a great return for Strider Hiryu, in general.

As for the gaming news... It's all just too much stuff to talk about. A lot of cool, a bunch of awesome, & and while I'd agree with those who maybe felt that there were just a few too many farming-related games in the Nintendo Direct, it just shows that there's definitely a strong market for those now.

Believe me when I say I really wanted to talk about the Battle Network and Suikoden remakes--but this was such a hectic week and we had so much news that I'd still be writing the column if I didn't cut things off at some point. Look forward to my Tomyo Game Show coverage next week! For now: Im very touched to see Capcom putting that much effort into Battle Network. It was a very special game for me in High School, as I bonded with my best friend over it (the same guy who got me into Tales Of Symphonia, in fact).

The remaster will be locked to 30fps, and looks mostly to be just a 'port'. Keep in mind the original game on GameCube runs at 60fps, but later ports on other platforms run at 30fps likewise.

Soooo much good stuff for me this week. I'm loving a lot of the rpg remasters, remakes, and new games as well. Things like the farming games are not really my speed- but they are the sort of non-blockbuster game experiences that I am glad to see coming out and hopefully finding an audience.

The mentioned Suikoden remasters are interesting- I'd long held that to be a completely dead IP. Granted, remasters are not exactly a full revival, but they are still more than expected. Almost makes me hopeful that the True Rune story will one day be completed...but I really doubt it.

Xenosaga, on the other hand, is odd. I almost don't want a remaster of 1 & 2 (especially 2,) but would prefer an upgraded version of the DS game- it apparently was something done by Takahashi (or at his behest,) to fix a lot of the weaker narrative choices of 2 (which he did not direct- these games have a very strange dev history). Having said all that- I think it is a remarkable series. I can't think of very many that have such a flawed initial plan and development...and somehow manage to land such a satisfying ending. But all of this is just about renewing trademarks- so much ado about really very little. KOS-MOS and T-elos will continue to make guest appearances, but that'll be about it.

Oh, and speaking of not-actually dead IPs...the Valkyrie Elysium demo apparently paints a much more positive picture of the game than I had feared, as per the RPGFan preview. Which is nice- I was already going to end up buying their digital deluxe version (playing Lenneth on my current console is too tempting,) but its nice to know I'll have a better chance of two good games rather than just one.

Too early to celebrate yet, I'm half expecting Konami to give their own take on gacha/microtransactions in rpgs (part of the rooster are dlc exclusive* (*the good ending can only be achieved with all 108 characters), want 60fps? dlc...). Confused

So much stuff was announced this week. I'm kind of of overwhelmed. There's even a One Piece collab going on in Granblue Fantasy, which sounds like something that should have already happened years ago. (Also, a Melty Blood collab was announced for PSO2: New Genesis that hasn't been picked up by ANN yet. Might be the first non-FGO Nasuverse collab to go global?)

We know at least one of the new party members in Ryza 3 is Bos. I'll keep my out-flipping to a minimum to avoid spoiling any persons who just picked up the series, but I'm hyped. Very. He was one of the characters I considered a shoe-in for promotion in Ryza 2. Better late than never.

I don't really have any particular memories of A Wonderful Life, except that I happen to own the original GCN disc. It didn't quite click with me in the same way my maxed-out Harvest Moon 64 cart did. The RF3 remaster seems nice, but it's also the last of the "cute guys you can't date" entries, which for me is a likely pass (or a no-romance run like I did for RF4). As for the "new" RF series? All I can guess for the moment is starting over in a new setting, since the current world feels a bit played out.

And there's Battle Network news I have to track down now? End me.


(But I did finish Xenoblade 3! The themes are... uh.... a lot.)

I don't put much stock in to a company renewing a license (it's more worthwhile to keep it as far as I'm aware), but it would be nice to see a definitive version of those games.

I don't even think they were that good Anime hyper I didn't have an issue with using a gatch system (even enjoyed the randomness for the unique blades), but I don't understand why they went so F2P mobile with it.

Never played Cannon Dancer, but it looks like fun

I'm not really in to farming sims, but the kid mechanic in Story of Seasons did sound interesting. It's great that they now allow anyone to play and romance however they want, but I wonder how they'll end up handling the kid for couples that can't normally have one between themselves. Will they go with adoption, a surrogate or just keep it simple (and I'm sure easiest for the devs) and hand wave it away with a "it's a video game" and just have the kid be a mix of the two parents regardless

Fire Emblem - Engage is such an odd title. Tying in to the "engage" system is one way to go with the title, but I can't help think of Star Trek...
I don't think the character designs are bad, but they do seem to be a bit much for the game. I agree that they'd fit much better in a sequel to TMS (please please please). Looking at the artists other work, I imagine they knew what they were getting when they signed them up.

Nice to see some of the meat of the season pass for XB3 is coming so soon, but I'll hopefully be done by then, so I'll still be holding off on it till the big story part comes out next year

I can understand if people didn't care for the direct personally because the games didn't appeal to them, but I think any objective look at it will agree that it was a very good direct. There were a lot of new (many high profile) games that were announced and the games in the direct were almost all coming out within the next 6 months or so

Looking forward to all that Yakuza goodness. A little disappointed that the focus for 8 doesn't seem to be on Ichiban though. I loved 7's story, so I'd prefer to stick with the new cast at let Kiryu stay a special guest star

I really enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima, so hopefully Ronin (and AC: Japan) can do enough to distinguish itself. I imagine Ishin has enough of that Yakuza flavor to already stand on it's own.

You've got the Synduality trailer listed twice btw. I'm guess the second is supposed to be Stellar Blade

In the FOMT remake the harvest goddess shows up, asks if you want a boy or a girl, and the child shows up the next day. Not sure how it works in Olive Town since I never got to marriage in it but I assume it's similar.

Not trying to sound like I'm defending Konami or the actions they did in the past ten or so years, but saying they abandoned gaming for gambling machines is not actually true, their most profitable division is their gaming one, they're the most-profitable third-party publisher in Japan and Momotaro Dentetsu has become their best-selling game there as well (and the most successful third-party game Switch game in that region). Yeah, the way they treat their employees is awful, many Japanese companies are guilty of that (like many animation studios) and it would be nice if they weren't so stubborn and began making more AAA games and remaking some of their older titles. The Contra, Castlevania and TMNT collections, and the newly announced Suikoden remasters are at least some proof that they know there's an audience for some of their older titles, perhaps in the future they will finally let someone remaster the Metal Gear games.

I woke up on the day of the Nintendo Direct to my best friend texting me about the A Wonderful Life remake, haha. She knew it was my first Harvest Moon game, and that I'd be extremely excited for it (which I am!). This is the first I'm hearing that it'll have a nonbinary protagonist option, though, which just makes me more keen to get it. I hope they release the full cast list too, since I can't wait to see how Nami'll look in this remake.

Also, yeah, Harvest Moon games don't tend to show the whole "giving birth" bit of having children. In AWL iirc, there's just a timeskip after marriage, and you just have a (two-year-old?) son in your house now. They'll probably include the gender options for children that were in the PS2 version (since the GCN version had only sons), but I wonder if they'll include Lumina as a romanceable character...

I'm also very excited for the TOS port. This'll be my third time buying Symphonia, but being able to have it on the go will be amazing. I suspect they'll probably release a separate port of TOS2 as well at this rate, though I'm less sure about whether I want to buy that.
