There'll be a knock-on effect for screenings outside Japan because of this. Usual delay for markets not the United States is 2-3 months, so earliest some regions will see this in cinemas is early 2023 by my reckoning.

If it's delayed by that timeline you mentioned it still could come out in 2022. September +2 to 3 months equals November or December potentially.

"The film was slated to open in Japan on September 10 alongside IMAX screenings of the film."

That's not going to happen if the advance screening for August is cancelled. They'll want a new advance screening date prior to the official public screening, and if they're ill with Covid that's a minimum two weeks to quarantine and recover, so earliest they could get it out would be September 28th.

No cinema I know of will release new movies in the dying days of December, especially something as big as this which has plenty of established fans from earlier series. Safe to say January 2023 is the earliest feasible air-date outside of Japan, since time is required for subtitles preparation which Japanese audiences do not need.

Well, that sucks, but I guess it can't be helped.

"the film is delayed due to production delays caused by COVID-19."

I don't thing 2 weeks is going to cut it. It's the actual making of the movie that's behind due to previous production delays (plural) caused by COVID, not a singular sudden delay that can be quickly turned around with a quarantine.

The big question is who dropped the ball in communication? Surely someone knew this was going to happen for a while, why wait until two days before the advance screening to say anything? Were they really pushing staff hard trying to hit that deadline in hopes of an 11th hour completion? I sure hope not, staff is pushed hard enough as it is, they should have just announced a new release date later instead of definitely disappointing a sizeable chunk of their fan base that I'm sure scheduled their plans around this screening.

Do you or i know how long it will be delayed by? No. So the movie still be released outside of Japan by the end of 2022.

This COVID excuse is getting old real fast. The first Progressive film was made right in the middle of the height of the pandemic and didn’t have ANY delays. We now have people going out in droves to watch movies to the point of breaking box office records like Spider-Man: No Way Home, which DID have delays due to being a LIVE ACTION film. Animated films don’t have that excuse because they can be completed from the comforts of the animators’ homes. Why can’t the studio just admit they’re having NORMAL production issues instead of using COVID as a flimsy excuse? I still don’t even understand why they chose to skip 2 whole volumes of the novels when adapting to film. Their excuse is because “well, the Elf War campaign isn’t finished, so we don’t want to adapt it yet”. Uh, so? It not being finished hasn’t stop the NOVELS from giving us the story bit by bit. And plus, part of the Elf War Campaign IS IN THE NOVEL THIS MOVIE ADAPTS! No, I think they were just trying to rush through to get Morte in the story, which is very disappointing because I was looking forward to seeing each novel adapted. Skipping through novels just makes zero sense to me when the novels are already being published at such a slow pace that Kawahara will likely never finish the Progressive series. Isn’t rushing through the story the EXACT reason why he chose to start the Progressive series to begin with?

I doubt you've the confidence to bet money on that, and I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.

My personal estimate is earliest Q1 2023, but if the illness-induced delay is more serious than reported than Q2 2023 is more realistic. The first movie only came out in my region when the home video release in Japan came before the date.

I put money on it. Sure I might lose. But I could also win.
Just because things happen a certain way in your area doesn't mean it will happen in other areas. Your area effects only exist for you and only you. In certain circumstances movies/shows will have deals in effect that see its release quicker than other shows.

Tokyo's numbers are spiking right now. Plus, I'd honestly bet that Progressive's first movie was actually delayed (along with a load of other stuff), but before its announcement.

Issue is no matter what first weekends are the biggest times for any film anywhere really. If a studio/theaters perceive any impact on that first weekend they're going to push it back even if the their reasoning doesn't really hold much logic. The idea that if they push it back people will stay home at this point doesn't work, they're just going to find something else to do in place of it. Though it being middle of week the advance screening might have people just going home after work/school since not much to do in the middle of the week but come weekend they'll be out and about as normal so I do agree "what's the point."
