That's good, I've been interested in trying it out.

This is great for fans but I'm bummed they'll have missed out on the vanilla PSO2 experience and the ramp-up of NGS in the year since it's launched.

I saw "Phantasy Star" and "New Genesis Game" in the same headline and briefly imagined a 16-bit style sequel to Phantasy Star IV with sprite-based graphics and a long single-player campaign only to be disappointed that it's just more Phantasy Star Online.

At least we still get new Sega Genesis games, including the occasional Japanese-style RPG, from indie developers, but a new Genesis-style Phantasy Star game from Sega themselves would be the announcement of the decade for classic Sega fans. But the only way Sega would likely put out a new 2D Phantasy Star game in this day and age would be to make it a phone game riddled with microtransactions so 2D Phantasy Star is probably best left in the past.
