Cool to see someone inspired by an anime they enjoyed to write their own story.

Eh, I heard the author mention that they mainly wrote their novel out of spite, and sometimes great things can be born out of spite. Plus, the author's not wrong about how badly FRANXX crashed and burned at the end. Lots of other people hated the second half of the series, too. I mean, have you seen Jacob Chapman's Twitter thread analyzing the ending and how the series enforces gender roles and heteronormativity and portraying doubling down on the status quo as a good thing? https://twitter.com/weebservations/status/998347908314349568 Last edited by FireChick on Mon Jun 06, 2022 12:27 pm; edited 1 time in total |

It's incredibly refreshing to see not everyone was on board with the show and wasn't satisfied with the ending either.
I watched this show trying to see what the appeal was, but it never quite enamored me as it did for others. In fact, I was just mostly confused why it had such a rabid fanbase it was pretty perplexing. I just felt like I was out of touch the whole time wondering if I missed what the appeal was. (I was that Principal Skinner meme) I don't think there's anything wrong with creating a piece of work that goes against it's inspiration (even if it's out of spite) they can still both coexist and be enjoyed by many different people. |

Eh, I heard the author mention that she mainly wrote her novel out of spite, and sometimes great things can be born out of spite.][/quote] In terms of bad writing, Darling in the Franxx is basically the anime equivalent of The Room so I'm not surprised that I'm the only person who felt spiteful by the end. Good for her to channel that in a creative direction. |

THAT SAID, after reading that ENTIRE twitter thread, I can say this much. Its amazing how someone can look at anything and then add their own bias to it and try to frame it into something it is not. That thread wasn't even an analysis, and with all due respect, MANY in that thread were calling them crazy and other stuff, can't blame em considering it is pretty out there and untrue. Heck, what Chapman was saying sounds like something u could attribute to a TON of anime and even Chapman admitted in 1 instance they see everything as political/with an agenda so that right there further says it all. They are bringing their own beliefs and feelings into everything instead of giving a show a PROPER analysis based on whats IN the show itself and I say in the show itself becus the ENTIRE REASON humans couldn't have children anymore? Was ANSWERED in the show itself! What was the cause? Humans editing their body to be immortal, however this led to all of mankind who underwent the procedure to become unable to have kids. And let me just say one last thing on this, NOTHING in the show far as i can recall, said ANYTHING to the effect they were claiming about, whether implying it or otherwise I don't believe anything like that was in the show. U might can have a case for the same sex relationship that got shot down becus unrequited feelings, but thats a thing thats depicted in MANY anime and was not (far as I recall) the main focus, it was part of the drama the show had. In any case, what am trying to say here is, yeah the show ended in unsatisfactory ways, yes it ruined the potential it had, no am not a fan of the show as i neither like nor dislike it as imo it was JUST ok, but I'll be damned if i sit back and say nothing to bs that someone is spewing like Chapman is and u shouldn't share that as any kind of "proof" of something cus its not. U wanna bash the anime? Fine, but lets not do so with lies. :P I mean, honestly, u could really point to many series and say the same things just cus oh it tried to have and do this with its story, when in reality its not true. Now if the creator(s) of the series came out and said this is true then u'd have a case for that particular series but I highly doubt the creator(s) of Franx even confirmed this is the case. I love anime and thats why i didn't wanna say nothin, cus if crap like this is allowed to spread then one day u might see anime's stories negatively affected becus they're too scared to make stories if they think society will just lash out at em becus suddenly thats something thats wide spread where people just bash cus of untrue bias and beliefs that had nothing to do with the anime itself. The fandom should be supportive, not detrimental to the makers of anime, they have a hard enough job as is... |

I've been following Xian Jay Zhao's YouTube channel for a while after seeing their Mulan videos but unfortunately I haven't gotten a chance to read Iron Widow yet. I've seen only praise for the book though, so I should really get around to it.

I imagine you'd have to focus on very specific sub-cultures in the anime community to find this kind of discussion. The vast majority of people do not care one bit about 'heteronormativity', 'gender roles' or 'right wing propaganda". On all the normal anime circles I frequent I see people talking about the characters, fight scenes, mech designs, and other stuff they actually like about the show. People to this day still treat Zero Two as a Top Tier waifu and merchandise continues to be pumped out well after the show ended. |

These types of complaints are in the tiniest of minority. Even among western sources most fans love this kind of stuff much to the despair of these individuals who hoped that western influence on Japan would lead to more different types of anime being made. As it turns out it just lead to more isekai, harem, and light novel anime because that's what the majority of western fans also like. There's no need to worry about this kind of stuff affecting anime and manga, other than seeing more creators speak out and denounce these people like we've been seeing. |

There’s a very fine line between critique and hate fic style pettiness.
That being said I can easily see why most editors would give the premise the side eye. |

I wasn't trying to make a statement or anything. I just found it and thought it'd be an interesting discussion springboard or something. |

Darling in the Franxx is still a 10/10 to me and I enjoyed it leagues more than Evangelion. Then again I saw Darling years before I saw Evangelion.

Read this book last year and I thought the writer had to be an anime fan (same as War Girls) . I almost didn't even read it because I wanted to drop it over the depiction of foot binding (which I found out later looks way worse than any words could describe it)
