Well, not as fun as it could be, is the impression I get from the review. Yet, I feel I could find it enjoyable regardless. Someday I'll spare the time for it.

Wow, look at those cool characters: Demitri and Morrigan sure are awesome. And who does the series focus on? Donovan. The most generic, boring character on the roster. This is why this series fails. Nobody wanted to know about his angst, but that's what we get for most of the show.

At the end of the day this is a pure style over substance affair, where the dialogue isn’t interesting enough to make people invest in these characters, more than likely looking at selected clips of the fight scenes or fast forwarding.
But at least it looks good. The atrocious US cartoon couldn’t even do that.
If they weren’t re-examining every cent they’re spending, I’d say a reboot under Netflix is right up their alley (they are making a new Tekken anime after all).

In the 90's, anything video game-related would sell - that's why they made 'em

This is one of my anime features I watch every Halloween, along with Blood: The Last Vampire, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Van Helsing, and Cowboy Bebop Movie. I had no idea Madhouse was involved with DarkStalkers' Revenge. Hell, I remember owning the OVAs on English Dubbed VHS. Best vocal cast for this series.

This suffers from the same blah energy a lot of the 90s OVAs suffered from (Ninja Cadets, half of the Ranma OVAs). I still say the animation and art are absolutely gorgeous. It’s worth a watch just for the visuals.
I haven’t seen a solid video game anime movie or OVA since Street Fighter 2.

The Fatal Fury OVAs are a pretty fun time, at least.

The thing is, Donovan wasn't even that angsty in the games. He was quiet and stoic, but he had a personality. He liked to read. He even smiled once in a while (usually with Anna).

I remember first watching this OVA years ago back when Viz and Pioneer released it as part of their partnership. Largely follows events up to the second game of the Darkstalkers video games, Night Warriors (Vampire Hunter).
Considering how horrible many video game anime adaptations of fighting games were during that era, the Darkstalkers OVA series is actually one of the more competent adaptations with following the game's story and the solid visuals and animation, though still hampered by some of the issues of such titles by trying to cram as many characters from the game as possible into it and the storytelling feeling a bit crammed with its focus on three different pairs of characters from the game with Donovan & Anita, Felicia & Jon Talbain, and Morrigan & Demitri.
