$20 for a paperback? I really hope that's a placeholder.

The TokyoPop version ran approximately 460 pages. Think of it as buying two volumes at once.

The Amazon listing indicates this volume is 280 pages. Yes, that is pricier than an average light novel volume but I believe a lot of the old volumes are OOP and expensive to buy so if Seven Seas is giving me the chance to collect all the volumes, I'm not too bothered by the price.

@Blood-

I wonder if they are breaking the first volume down into two? No matter it is worth the extra. I will be double dipping when it comes out.

Back when this came out the first time, someone reported that this was originally sold as a (heavy) novel. Apparently it was subsequently reissued as a light novel when the anime came out.

I've always thought that the ending theme for this portion of the anime was excellent, kind of haunting.

Edit: I checked Wikipedia and the first "book" of this series was originally published in two volumes. The entire series as of 2019 consisted of nine books, (seven novels and two short story collections). It was issued in 17 volumes (original printing) and 15 volumes (reprint). Looks as if we have a long ride ahead.

I'm a huge fan of the anime but I did feel like things were glossed and skipped over so I'm looking forward to getting the "full" story.

She has fans?

Speaking of, I wonder just how well she'd come across if Twelve Kingdoms came out today. It'd be easy to read her as a stand-in for the typical target-audience of bog-standard isekai fare.

Keep in mind the dimensions of those TokyoPop volumes were... unusually small. Approximately the same dimensions as standard manga volumes (speaking of pricing weirdness, I never have understood why manga costs so much more overseas in than in Japan -- typical MSRPs over here are 200 to 300% the Japanese sales price).

To be clear, I will continue to complain about this (with tax and shipping, this one volume is gonna be about $30 in total, which is nuts) but I'm still gonna be buying at least two copies. I may not live long enough to see all of the books released in English, but I'll certainly be doing as much as I can to ensure that everyone else does.

The anime adaptation is actually kind of like LoGH: it winds up adding a lot of stuff to Yoko's arcs that, imo, improve the story. It's one of my go-to examples for how adaptations can improve on the original work, even.

@ Fluwm: interesting. My untested theory is that reading the books and then rewatching the anime will deepen my already high appreciation of the anime.

@Fluwm

Yeah, looking at the TokyoPop version they probably couldn't make the type any smaller or us old folks wouldn't be able to read it. It is apparent that we will get two volumes to cover the first book. So $40 plus S&H.

Now if we could get the books that the anime & manga "Ghost Hunt" was based on.

Edit: @Blood- it is not an untested theory. I've done this with a number of light novel/anime combinations and there is no doubt that reading the source material improves the appreciation of the anime. Unless, of course, neither is any good. Wink

Probably! That's how it went for me, at least. Similarly with LoGH. It's rare to see an adaptation that really improves on the original, but when it happens... it's a beautiful thing to see.

I'm assuming we'll also be getting eBook versions, unless for whatever reason the publisher has some inane reason not to want that (thinking of you, Kadokawa). Whenever I have the option these days, I go for ebooks for fiction, just because it makes reading so much more convenient. Not just due to font size, though that can be an issue -- along with, you know, really low-quality paper where you can see the text from the reverse side.

Typically, for whatever reasons, print copies get listed much earlier than digital copies.

As a dinosaur, I still prefer the tactile experience of holding a book in my hands as opposed to reading off a screen, despite the latter's superiority as far as storage and cost goes. For example, my copies of The Saga of Tanya the Evil are really good quality and I love the covers. Reading them in book form increases my enjoyment of the content.

I get it. I'm still mostly-physical for nonfiction -- but I'm one of those weirdoes who likes to scribble notes in the margins and mark certain parts of the text, etc., etc., and nothing beats paper for that.

Granted, part of my move to digital is motivated by more... worldly concerns. Like a distinct lack of shelf space, because I've got far, far too many books already. I can't even imagine what my living conditions would be if all my digital stuff were also physical. I'd need to have my own library, first; then I'd have to add a new wing.

Oh I hear the storage lament. Space-wise, I have mansion needs but a "cardboard box under a bridge" budget. Crying or Very sad
