Yeah I was pretty excited when I first heard this announcement.
Bastard was quite the hit at anime clubs during my early days as anime fan. So many fond memories with my anime club friends watching this crazy and outrageous show along with other classics of the time. A Bastard!! reboot is well overdue and can appreciate, as suggested, deeper and more character driven story elements in exchange for the violence and over-the-top creativity that made the original shine but can't really be replicated these days. |

Interesting to see Bastard!! explained primarily by way of the 90s OVA, but there are a couple of minor things I would like to correct, since they're often stated but are somewhat erroneous:
While it's been in Ultra Jump since 2000, that actually only accounts for roughly 5+ volumes of content (Volumes 22 [second half] to 27), out of a total 27. Therefore, most of Bastard!!'s manga actually comes from Shonen Jump, both the main magazine & the seasonal specials, and in fact when it moved over to Ultra Jump it was in the middle of a gigantic fight, so the sexuality & raunchiness that the manga is known for is actually primarily from its Shonen Jump run. For example, a scene where D.S. literally performs a "gansha" onto the face of the Archangel Michael, who in this series is a woman? This is one of the most notoriously sexual moments in the entire series, yet this happened while it was still running in Shonen Jump.
Yes & No. I own the Bastard!! Data Book, & it shows that Kazushi Hagiwara actually had already altered many of the music references from the start, so for example it was never "Metallicana", but rather has always been "Meta-Llicarna" (which the new anime looks to be using, based on what the official website shows). Hirohiko Araki may have always been rather direct with his references, to the point of silliness at times, but Hagiwara actually went through the trouble of altering many of the references from the very start, likely in an attempt to make them sound somewhat believable in a fantastical way, though there are still tons that are just direct (Accept, Damned, DIO, Judas, etc.). Regardless, though, the 90s OVA is indeed still an excellent way to experience Bastard!! (if only the early portion), and I am super excited for the Netflix reboot. |

Is there any way to watch the original OVA legally or do I have to sail the seven seas?

You can hunt down old Pioneer (before they were Geneon) VHS tapes or DVD release, but they sadly aren't cheap by any means today. Unfortunately, the Bastard!! OVA was one of a few anime produced by Shueisha itself during the 90s, so the chances of it being licensed again sadly rather low. Hell, it was even news-worthy back when it was first licensed by Pioneer back in 1998, calling it the "Shueisha barrier" being broken. |

No problem. I would love to see the Bastard!! OVA be given a new release (& ideally with an HD remaster), and the same is true for Combutible Campus Guardress, a 4-episode OVA that was co-created by Kazushi Hagiwara & Satoru Akahori (and was another Shueisha-produced OVA, so it's never been re-released, at all). |

For various degrees of legality, the dub is available on YouTube. If you want the subtitled option, the DVD is on eBay, for instance, and shockingly cheap now. |

When I first heard that a reboot was happening, I knew it had to be on Netflix because they're really the only company that has the money to fund these kinds of projects and the format to let them air without major edits. The era of the OVA is long gone, but Netflix seems to want to bring back its spirit (probably why the company has studied so hard on how to circumvent production committees).

Bastard has always been a good time to watch. So much so I purchased this anime twice due to it being stolen from me both instances. I was super stoked that Netflix picked it up but sadly that means a possible home release will delayed for quite a while, the back positive to that means we may get a crisp clean bluray copy of the original. Here's hoping.

I wouldn't worry about potential censorship, they specifically said that the reason they partnered with Netflix Japan was because Netflix was the only company that didn't ask them to censor anything. In other words, they fully intend to do a faithful adaptation, or at least that's what it appears.

I had to laugh at the article prioritizing a violence and sexual warning and leaving out potential spoiler warning.

Bastard!! is one of my top 10 favorite manga. It's a fun over the top action magical fantasy series. If Devilman can bring in new fans, I bet Bastard!! can as well.
