It's not even a genuine subscription service. I haven't found any series where the subscription covers the entire run; they expect you to read several volumes on sub and then buy the rest. And at $9-$10 dollars a volume, for something you can't download or own in any respect, they have no competitive advantage over any of the existing services. It's bizarre. I don't know why anyone would use this.

Is the service world-wide or region-specific?

Somebody walked into a board room and said "Boys, I've cracked the code. We'll charge more and offer less."

Anybody been able to download it yet? I don't see it in the Play Store. Maybe iOS only?

Launch and service are web-only, no app.
Also US only.

And add to that the price points mentioned above, as well as the existing competition (mangaplus, comikey, azuki etc), I see this folding in 2-3 years tops. Although 3 might be a stretch...
Aside perhaps Bookwalker, and even they botched their piecemeal light novel service, how come Japanese are so inept at launching overseas ventures by themselves?

Because they don't understand that the US market, as well as other foreign markets, may not work the same way as the Japanese market. That's it. They keep trying to do the same strategies as they already have for the Japanese market, and don't realize that those strategies (that barely work in Japan as it is, the only reason they do is because relatively more Japanese readers still buy print than western readers) are simply not attractive to western customers.
