Nice read. This message of the article was well written. At first, Fushi seems to have no clear motivation about what he should be doing in the story other than remembering the young boy but when meeting Pioran and Gugu he learns a proper understanding about living and what he should do for them. When Gugu saved him from the Knockers, he kept the same form for 3 years apparently believing it was saved but whatever are those monsters that chase him, changed his viewpoint about whether or not he should be alone. The latest episodes seem to further touch the value of life but it's more violent as Fushi is against killing.

Pace The Beholder, not all pain promotes positive growth, as those knowing of the (in)famous Skinner Box experiments are well aware of, not to mention studies for now more than a century of shell shock/combat fatigue/PTSD sufferers.

On the other hand, adversity if dealt with appropriately can increase human decency, as Solzhenitsyn described of his time in the Soviet labor (and often death) camps. Something similar is being portrayed in For Your Eternity (Fumetsu no Anata e) as happening to Tonari as she transforms from someone who will sell people into slavery to get by to a person whose goal is rehabilitating the lives of those left on Jananda Island.

Thanks for the kind words about the article! You reminded me of the years that went by with Gugu and the rest. There's such slow and steady growth here, more akin to actually growing up. And even in the midst of those years, Fushi must have learned over and over again of the everyday sacrifices of living life with those whom you love, and who love you.
