I'll be honest, the two things I remember from Pandora Hearts are the labyrinthine explanations for the main party's quest (which boils down to "hunt the monster of the week, mcguffin get!" and the tedious repetition in the dialogue exchanges:
Supporting Character: Oz, your life is a lie! Existence is meaningless, darkness will triumph and your every effort is futile!
Oz: (breaks down) Oh no, you're actually right! What am I doing? I'm going to give into despair and do something dark right here and now!
...
Oz: (cheeky smile) That's what you thought I'd say, right?
[Oz proceeds to gives a moralizing sermon about light and hope and sticking with your friends.]
Supporting Character: Stunned gasp! Wide, goggle eyes!

I haven't read Pandora Hearts in a long time but the things I remember were the characters and the ending.
I can't remember the finer plot details but I remember it was very convoluted in the second half with all its twist and stuff. I was mixed about the stuff that happened but I did finish the series and remember being satisfied so it was pretty good.

I actually read Pandora hearts very recently (between episode 1 and 2 of Vanitas), and the thing I think will stay with me the most are the overwhelming bittersweetness. I was actually spoiled on most of the twists in the series but they somehow never prepared me from the experience of watching it unfold. Simple sentences would bring me to tears, I don't think I'll ever truly recover from Break declaring that he wanted to live after all
If there were things I WOULD criticise the series for, it would be:
1. Ada being underutilized which made her climatic changing of Vincent, something even Gil wasn't able to do fall flat. Is forgiving characters stewed in hate some sort of trope in Japanese media? I saw it in Taishou X Alice too
2. The author tells me Break and Sharon have a sibling like relationship, fail to write their dynamic like such, and then have her rebound with Reim who she had had negative develop with, outstanding
3. More petty than the others but Jack dying with any form of satisfaction made me so salty lol, I wanted him to die kicking and screaming

Is there actually a way someone new to the series can check it out? The article got me curious enough to look up the manga, but it looks like most, if not all of the volumes are out of print now.

Ebooks are always an option. The entire series is on BookWalker, for example.

I own everything but the last two volumes and I am bitter about it. I still want to return to it, but I wonder where I can find those last two...

In case my username doesn’t give it away, Pandora Hearts is one of my favorite manga of all time. Sadly I wasn’t able to buy all the volumes and will have to settle for digital copies, but that’s better than nothing.
I still hope we can get a fateful anime adaptation one day. Especially if they can bring back the VAs and Yuki Kajiura for the soundtrack.
