Episode 12 (finale)
It was kind of more straight forward than I might have suspected. The original series was kind of a dark magical girl series, where it played on its cute stuff to kind of make the whole thing become twisted and having some frankly scary characters. This version was just mostly up front an positive, which also means a bit boring on its idols meets card game setting, other than some VR stuff. There was a part in this last episode where a character said their wish was for more people to play the card game, which I could imagine that taking a more fun route might be better to sell the real life card game. It mostly banked on having some interesting characters, and I think that there were a few wins. The DJ group for one (card jockey), that sort of thing can be more interesting than just straight idols. The group made of Rei's old teammates was also good, the drama was at least interesting, even if it seemed to come down to apparently a possessive lesbian that lied because she did not want her friend crush getting too close to Rei. Plus their leader, Muzica, was kind of a really cool character, a darker skinned girl of I would say non Japanese ethnicity, which I am a little surprised I have noy seen discussed much elsewhere. Anyway, rating this show I will give a Decent (6/10), it was not like I was super into it, but I kind of suspect that at a different time I could have had more fun, there really is not anything objectionable, and I like how the rival characters are not just made to be bad guys. No knowledge of the the other series is needed, in fact I might argue that seeing them might be a negative since it keeps giving you this itching feeling of a twist, but you don't even get really references to the others. Don't come expecting to really learn anything about the card game either. Not that most episodes were much story related, but the episode that I could imagine being called filler or fanservice, a pool episode, was probably the best episode, and mostly for having the different groups interact in more interesting ways. |
