I just went into an anime chat on AOL and I just found out something I never want to know.... Get anti-otaku behind a computer and they think they're God... all 2 anime fans in there were getting harrased so bad for liking anime... It was sad... Anyone else have a similar experience?

I ran accross that myself a while ago. It seems like it may be a parody or somesuch, as the creator approaches things so tendentiously and uses information and pictures so selectivel out of context that it really can't be taken seriously. He's either attempting humor, or an idiot.
And I don't mean an idiot for hating anime, but an idiot for how he approaches his hate. |

It a humor site. It's supposed to be funny. He has some funny stuff in there (for some reason I never get tired of bad cosplay photos with captions), and the mail section is a hoot.
Not a bad effort. -Zac |

From the knowing perspective in particular, it is rather good. Although some of that is monumentally disturbing. I like things like this, exposing yourself to them now and then keeps you from getting all serious and defensive about anime.
That letters section is great. I hadn't read it before. The sheer density of some people is stunning and hilarious. I always surprised by the number of people who can't pick up on humor unless it is explicitly delineated as humor. I guess that might be why satire isn't as popular these days. |

Furries, vocal SF fans, feminists, the _American Family Association_ (one of the groups anime fans love to hate), Christians, Muslims, and virtually every other group (social, religious, or political) gets this sort of ragging at some point or another, usually by yet another group who (at some point) gets ragged on. Welcome to the Internet age. Everyone is reduced to a name and a number, anonymized from effects in the real world. Naturally, you can still find that person in the real world, but that level of privacy allows people to lash out without the fear of reprisal that would normally keep them in line.. A knowledgeable philosopher could probably use the Internet as a means of showing humanity is inherantly "evil". :) Just tread more carefully, and look for groups of less extreme people -- Don't go to AOL Chatrooms, but instead to IRC channels like #anime or #manga (on most networks) or virtually any channel on Aniverse. The anime fans there significantly outnumber the anime-haters, and the fans there also have control over who has access to the channel, so anime haters will never stay in the channel very long. |

I've found that file serving has pretty much killed (or at least severly wounded) anime related chatting. Even in the non-file serving channels, I've mostly seen a handful of regulars and a lot of people coming in looking for downloads then leaving when they don't find any. Before, people actually got together to talk in anime channels. The near total collapse of Dal-net hasn't helped any, either.
