Oh I got excited for a new trailer but it's just the one from a few days ago. Gah. Also this title is still bad. 15 years from now they'll make another remake and "new" will sound silly for this.

Is it really possible to improve on the original production and still keep the basic setup? I watched the first season back when you still bought discs with three or four episodes separately. Much of the enjoyment derived depended on my not understanding everything that was going on, unexplained contradictions and so on. When everything had been explained halfway through the second season the show became less exciting.

Funi's picked this up? Kind of surprised as I recall the original Higurashi was picked up by them years ago as part of their acquisition of a number of Geneon's titles after their closure. However, they never picked up the later seasons of the franchise and allowed their rights to it to lapse due to lower sales than they were expecting to get out of it. Would have thought Sentai would pick this up.

My thoughts exactly. I think Higurashi is a lot like Psycho-Pass in that regard. The mystery is a main part of its appeal, but once the big reveal has happened then repeat viewings (or sequels) don't measure up to what came before. The reboot may not be as interesting to people who are already familiar with Higurashi but it could be a great way for new fans to check it out. |

So this one will be (most likely)dubbed. Higurashi hasn't been dubbed since since season 1, I heard mixed feelings towards the dub.

I think Funimation had a distribution license/agreement with Geneon, even the later complete collections had Geneon branding. |

Me three. Makes me wonder what's the real purpose of this reboot. My finger points to the new mobile game. |

Following how disappointing Deen's first foray into adapting Ryukishi's visual novels was, this project will hopefully flesh out the story the way it was meant to, as well as keep the VN's tone intact which was unfortunately lackluster in the anime. |

Ignoring the mess that was FUNi's final statement on the matter 9 years ago, the new series is under a different committee from the old one so that's most likely why. Higurashi seasons 1-Rei - NBC Universal Japan (formerly Geneon Japan) Higurashi New - Kadokawa Pictures As for why Sentai didn't bother, it could be because of the committee change or because of sales which if bad is kinda their own fault for what happened with their handling of Kai (specifically the two episodes with really bad framerate issues which they didn't completely fix for the complete set).
Yeah, FUNi's release was part of the 2008 distribution deal they had with Geneon USA after it's closure. The Sentai releases have similar branding on the back cover & discs but that's because they got them straight from NBC so it's another case of crediting the Japanese licensor and when FUNi eventually releases the new show on Blu-ray, it should have Kadokawa's logos on it. |
