Really glad this is giving people a new opportunity to check out the original - with so many decades of sequels and spin-offs, sometimes it gets a little lost that, yes, the first Gundam really is that good.
Another incentive to watch it this way: This version uses the original movie voiceovers and not a later re-recorded special edition version that is the only Japanese voice audio used on the US releases (the UK Anime Limited/All The Anime blu-ray has both). I do wish they weren't so random and mysterious about streaming Gundam anime in general, though... |

They typically announce all the temprorary streams on https://en.gundam.info/news/info.html Also, now that they've seen OG they should totally force him to watch The Origin just so he can get the full backstory between Char and the Zabi Family. |

I really had fun with these movies. I've been told that the movies had to cut stuff from the tv stuff which might explain why Fraw bo's relationship with her later husband isn't that explored. Probably the one easier to explore is Bright since Amuro and Lalah's relationship feels a bit sudden as they barely interact twice.
Still, the animation and story were nicely told. The second movie showed seems to have told Kai's arc well but the dude who sacrifices himself felt the the least explored. Maybe Amuro's dad feels a bit outofnowhere in the third movie too (seems like Valvrave tried imitating this with Haruto's dad but that series was quite rushed to the point the pilots of the titular mechas were barely developed.) Something that I found really weird is the kids. I had no idea why Tomino had to put comic relieves in a story about war and even give them a really dark story where they try to bomb them just to escape like nothing. I guess this Eureka Seven tried doing the same thing of kids in relation to Eureka but made them even more annoying. I do remember people telling me Amuro was supposed to be in a relationship with Sayla/Artesia but it didn't make it to the final product. I wonder if Sunrise plans to rerelease Zeta Gundam but the format might depend since Tomino changed the ending. |

I’ll admit, I was kind of hoping the movies being posted was going to be the lead to something big like the LA film finally being cast, but with Virtual SDCC being a wet fart of an event, no such luck.
Regardless, this is a pretty good set of films and themes of war and the costs on people, even in a so-called “Just war” with Space Nazis. |

Well... a lot of the cut material was stuff that was clearly included in order to push toys (they didn't sell particularly well, and it wasn't until towards the end of the show's original run that Bandai stepped in and started making Gundam model kits). Tomino apparently thought that giving Sayla a giant space fighter that merged with the Gundam to become the "G-Armor", the "G-Bull", or the "G-Sky" was a bit too silly to make it into the films.
Yeah, it's clear from Tomino's Mobile Suit Gundam novelization that he always kind of had that idea floating around in his head. Some people even claim that Beltorchika Irma (Amuro's love interest in Zeta Gundam) was originally supposed to be Sayla, but that they couldn't get her voice actress to come back. I'm not sure how true all of that is, but it's kind of funny that in Tomino's novelization of Char's Counterattack, Amuro's new love interest Chan Agi is herself replaced with Beltorchika. |

Fun article. I'm glad to see the movies are still doing their job.
Fraw Bo and Hayato is just one of things that happens as a natural occurrence of them being two lonely people that like one another. You get a better glimpse of her and Amuro drifting apart in the series for sure, but there's not a lot of build-up to her and Hayato'a marriage. And hell, they went through hell together in White Base; anyone would feel a connection to someone they shared that experience with in their formative years. The TV series is a bit better at illustrating how powerful it is for two new newtypes to meet one another. They don't have too many more scenes, but there's extra bits that show how strong it is for their minds to have touched.
Sleggar is definitely a bit better developed in the show, while Amuro's dad is honestly a bit better handled in the movie. Really, the series and the movies complement each other quite well. There's a lot I like more in the series, but the films are much more polished and honestly don't lose too much, especially in regards to the show's first third.
Kid characters were everywhere in anime back then, often at the behest of other people further up the chain from the director or series composer. Look up the Clover gundam toy to get a better idea at whom the producers wanted to aim the show. |

I remember binging all the Universal Century Gundam series and movies in my last year of highschool around 2011, and watched both the original 79 Gundam tv show and the compilation movies and I enjoyed both of them. The original MSG is a very interesting show, the animation is not the best quality but for it's time the story was truly revolutionary, and I can see how it changed the anime industry back in the early 80s.
I think my favourite character is not Char or Amuro, but instead Kai Shiden, his character development was pretty well done in my opinion. If I had to choose my favourite episode that would be "A Cosmic Glow". One thing that I like about the compilation movies is that they replaced Hayato's Guntank with another Guncannon for the space scenes, seeing the Guntank in space always looked silly to me. |
