oh shit, this is not good news

Netflix continues to be serious about expanding their influence in anime. I guess the idea was to get an executive familiar with the...picky nature of US anime fans,

that's a major reason I dislike binge. It creates a short spike of conversation but that's it. I enjoy the 3-6 month discussion that comes with weekly releases, a lot. Also I find that binging stuff makes it harder to retain details. It also leads to harder-to-avoid spoilers since some people will watch the entire thing the night it comes out and can't hold their tongue. >.<

if it was an america/US focused thing, why would he go to netflix tokyo and not netflix america???

That'd be great. I have no issues with releasing a whole series at once, but I hate when a series is held for a full batch release in NA when it's being simulcasted in other territories. I think their reasoning has just been, that that's just how they do it here Anime hyper

No, the idea is probably to get someone who is familiar with doing business with the Japanese in general and the anime industry in specific.

Netflix doesn't give a rip about Western anime fans. We're not their target market.

Then we get this weird hybrid thing where they make binge series but are short and release fast like Voltron 3 to 8

This is why I'm (very) cautiously optimistic. It's rather clear that, as it currently stands, Netflix wants to but does not get hardcore anime fans, so they got a guy who does. After Eva on Netflix sparked more controversy than hype post-release it's obvious something has got to change. The question is if they'll listen to him or even if he gets streaming. I've honestly had no problems with Viz other than them taking forever to release Osumatsu-san in the States.

What we need is more international licensing, a lot of titles on Netflix are US only, those that are global get only a handful of dubs, and with crappy subs crosstranslated from english subs that are already controversial, making them inferior to the pirated content - literally noone wants that. Someone who worked with Viz should be aware of that.

The fact that they used the Jpn translation for the dub titles for silent voice is ironic

“Because that’s where he lives” is probably the simplest answer, but who says it has to be US-focused? Netflix is a global company and their “Original” anime stream worldwide.
