I can't remember any other seiyuu's death that has moved so many people this much. That's including Tsuru Hiromi, Iemasa Kayumi, Kawakami Tomoko, Honda Chieko, Suzuoki Hirotaka or Gouri Daisuke, to name a few. Not to say they're not sorely missed, but the reactions on the Internet have been overwhelming. Even on Imgur, people have posted about it more than once, and that's a thing that tends to be reserved only for people they deem legends.

I don't like comparing one person's death to another but it's also fair to keep in mind that social media has literally more than 100 times more in use than it was a decade or so ago. And even in the last few years alone a lot more seiyuu have joined twitter.
Tomoyo Kurosawa's tweet really hit me. Seeing them together, especially with her so young at the time... I'm really glad he seems to be so well loved by people around the world. I hope he knew how much everyone loved him |

Daisuke Gouri was particularly tragic since he killed himself. |

Could you update with Gon’s and Killua’s VAs from HxH:

I never got to meet him, but he was a big inspiration to us all.
I also have done business with his agency. Just a huge shock. |
