Well deserved.
To me, both Resident Evil 7 and RE2 Remake were HUGE.
I always considered the remake of the original one of, if not THE best remake ever made, as it fully delivered on the nostalgia of its source material while not only modernizing it for a new audience, but also adding so much new stuff that even those who played the original to death never knew what to expect and found completely new spooks.
Then, when Resident Evil 4 came out, I felt like not just the series, but kind of the genre as well, were dead. RE4 was a great game it its own right and I think I would've liked it a lot more if, like Devil May Cry, it was made into its own franchise or at least just started its own RE Spin-Off series (like Survivor, Outbreak, etc.), but the fact that it was a main, numbered title just irked me, as that all but guaranteed that the old way, not just in terms of gameplay and controls but also in terms of atmosphere and direction, was all but dead, since going back to the old ways after "revolutionizing" the series would feel like a step backwards and like they're saying RE4 was a mistake.
And when that game then was critically and financially successful, to say the least, I knew that the flood gates were open for more of its kind, which we saw in not just the rest of the RE series, but the genre as a whole, either following in RE4's footsteps or trying to re-invent the wheel in their own way.

I just didn't think it was a scary or creepy game at all and only had a few moments of anxiety and slight panic. Still very enjoyable, but just not horror or RE anymore. More like a clunkier, horror-themed shooter.

And then when RE5 came out, after changing directors and not delivering on certain promises, such as bringing back some of the spooks and catering not just to new, action-liking fans but also to old ones, and I didn't enjoy the game AT ALL, and when even the highly acclaimed indie games like Amnesia failed to spook or even appeal to me, I started to accept that horror games simply weren't for me anymore and would either just be annoying or, at best, be enjoyable B-movie schlock that I enjoy for some nice laughs.
Even Revelations, despite trying and being a valiant effort, really didn't work for me.

Flash forward a few years, and RE7, after looking like it'd be for the kinds of people who like that indie-flavor of horror, where you run away and hide all the time, ends up completely blowing me away. I didn't even play it in VR, as I don't have that hardware, but still, the game managed to strike that nice balance between action, empowerment, combat, helplessness, and more slow, hide-y moments. And that, mixed with a really good atmosphere and sound design, actually brought back the spooks that I thought I would never feel again, either because games just wouldn't be able to deliver them anymore, or because maybe I had just grown out of the ability to be spooked.
While feeling like a bit of a reboot in many ways, a big departure from the series, it ended up a flawed, but still amazing return to form in many other ways. It felt so much more like a modern Resident Evil than RE4 did, even though it really did not look the part.

And then they show first gameplay of RE2 Remake and it goes back to an over-the-shoulder playstyle, much like RE4-6 and once again I'm concerned. It looked fun and I was definitely looking forward to playing it from the day they announced it, but I expected, and thought I would prefer, it following the style of the first game's remake. And the fact that the protagonists looked and sounded nothing like they did in any other game they were in spelled disaster even for fans of the later games. It had so much potential to be trash, or at least incredibly disappointing to not just me, but fans of the installments I don't much care for as well.

But what I got blew everything else out of the water.

It was fun, controlled well, had cheese, but also serious moments, gruesome gore that didn't feel too LOLSOEDGY EKSDEE and, most importantly, it was SCARY and creepy!
I didn't think those things could mix as well as they did in this one. Even down to the controls.
When RE5 came out, there was a whole discussion about tank controls, and I always belonged to the camp that said those would be required in order to not make it feel too much like just an action shooter with an overpowered protagonist. You'd have to basically "switch" between focusing on evasion while having your back turned on the danger and being helpless, or you'd look at the danger and try to take it out. By being able to freely aim and move in a less cumbersome way, I thought you'd just never really feel overwhelmed.

But RE2 actually did it. And that while having actual, slow-moving zombies in manageable numbers. It still amazes me how they did it.

And just like the RE1 remake, the layouts and new ideas are just different enough to make things seem familiar, yet completely new and fun to explore.

And it looks and sounds great too! And they supported it with free content down the line.
The only real gripe I have with it, especially on a second playthrough, is that running away from that big guy gets a bit annoying and tiresome, much like in many of those indie horror games. But I didn't mind it on the first go.

I never thought I would say this, but it's quite possibly the best game in the series and I'm super stoked to see what they have in store in the future. A series that used to be one of my favorites and then became one I barely cared about anymore has returned and become one of my favorites again.
It's truly great and deserves every prize it can get. I don't care that it's a remake. It's different and well-made enough to fully deserve being the GOTY.

edit: Jesus, this is a bigger wall of text than I intended for it to be...

Someone please inform the makers of Resident Evil that tea-cupping one's hand gun is never a good idea. Ever.

For what's worth by the time 2002 the earlier style Resident Evil games were a tad bad dated so they needed to do something to make them feel fresh.

I mean sure if you ignore 4 is among the best selling entries in the series and the fact that 7 didn't exactly return the series completely to it's roots. And the remake of 2 takes a number of it's cues from 4 such as the over the shoulder camera perspective. Rather than just being done the same way as the first remake and zero.

.....RE4 was nowhere near as clunky as the Playstation Era games. You could move, you could shoot (and seldom have to worry about missing), you could even dodge enemy attacks, you could even see enemies without them needing to wander into frame, you couldn't really do all that well in the earlier games.

I think this is a thing that some people have really not come to grips with. It's not necessarily that don't the games are not scary more it's a considerable possibility that you're no longer scared of the games. Like 12-13 old me was scared of Nemesis from 3, 31 year old me? sees Nemesis as more of a nuisance than a scare same thing with Mr.X in the 2 Remake.

The RE Remake came out in 2002 no way was the remake of 2 ever going back to that style in 2019. If the game had came out around that time like it should've maybe.

You can make the player not feel overpowered but without using a dodgy control scheme.

RE2 was fun, but I wish they kept Claire's old look. Don't like her new face model at all. Much prefer her 2/Code Veronica look. I'm hoping they bring Julia Voth back for Jill in REmake 3, but I have my doubts. ..

Almost every action movie or show does that. Laughing It's far ingrained into pop culture to really change at this point.

After the disappointment that was Resident Evil Zero, I'm glad they didn't. All they did was release ports for 2, 3 & Code: Veronica X so those who owned a Gamecube didn't miss out on anything important.

Yeah, this was known for years since Alyson Court confirmed that it was a non-union work plus they already did this with Chris again for Resident Evil 7 so it was somewhat expected.

I miss Alyson as Claire and was one of those who hated the recast situation in Revelations 2 but with that said, Stephanie Panisello wasn't bad at all in REmake 2 and I wouldn't mind if she reprised if the character gets brought back for anything (assuming a Code Veronica remake doesn't happen).

Yeah, I'm not counting on that either but I do wonder about the voice acting side because they recently brought back Patricia Ja Lee for the Teppen mobile card game which was surprising because she hadn't voiced Jill since Resident Evil 5 and other VAs voiced Jill in games released since then.
